2017 Legion baseball Zone 1 playoffs set

STATEWIDE - The playoff seeds are set for the 2017 Legion baseball Zone 1 tournament, set to kick-off Thursday night at Husson University.

Post 51, locked in as the No. 5 and final playoff seed, forfeited a scheduled game with Brewer Wednesday night. This gives Brewer the No. 3 seed and a highly-coveted bye going into the playoffs, meaning No. 4 Skowhegan will square off with Post 51 in the opening round of the playoffs.

Pastime Club edges Augusta in Zone 2 American Legion baseball semifinal

...Pastime scored twelve runs in the second inning of its first playoff game against River Valley on Tuesday. And with five in the second of Wednesday’s semifinal matchup with Augusta, Pastime got all it needed to hang on for a 5-4 win, launching the Lewiston-based club into the Zone 2 championship against Bessey Motors.

“There’s a lot of good stuff to take out of it,” Pastime manager Jake Brown said. “We beat a team that can really hit the baseball, so that’s good. There was a lot of momentum changes in this game, and I think coming back from yesterday’s game where there were really no momentum changes, I really liked how our guys reacted to those changes.”

In the first inning, Pastime pitcher Evan Cox got out of the inning stranding just one batter. Pastime was set down in order in the bottom half by Augusta pitcher Ryan Sinclair, who went seven and two-thirds innings.

Bessey Motors grinds down Rogers Post in semifinals

...The top-seeded team in the Zone 2 American Legion baseball tournament flashed the leather Wednesday, limiting the damage Rogers Post inflicted in a 5-3 semifinal victory at Tim Bryant Memorial Field.

"The defense today was spectacular," Bessey Motors manager Shane Slicer said.

No. 1 Bessey Motors' defense had to be spectacular. Colton Carson was up and down on the mound, and the Oxford Hills-based team's bats were held mostly in check by fourth-seeded Rogers Post starter Ethan Brown.

Weather suspends opening Zone 1 Legion playoff game

BANGOR - The crucial play-in contest between No. 5 Post 51 and No. 4 Skowhegan was set to kick off the Zone 1 Legion baseball playoffs Thursday, but lightning got in the way.

Skowhegan scored one in the bottom of the first, but the game was halted in the bottom of the second due to bad weather. It will be picked up Friday at 6 p.m., with the winner going on to play No. 1 Bangor at 8 p.m.

The contest between No. 2 Hampden and No. 3 Brewer will now be played at 3 p.m

Zone 4 Legion playoffs: York finally gets measure of Noble

...The last team to qualify for the zone playoffs, York pounded out 16 hits — four by Gundlah — and now finds itself one win away from making the Legion state tournament after overtaking Noble, 10-4.

“That was kind of the thing through the high school season, too,” said Gundlah, the team’s catcher. “We knew we were going to get hits. We just didn’t know what time we were going to get them. Leaving them (loaded), it didn’t really discourage us.”

It was a satisfying win that upped York’s record to 9-8 and advanced it to Friday’s zone final at Fayette-Staples (Thornton Academy), a 6-3 winner over Staples Crossing. Whoever wins that game will join Zone 4 champion Wells in the eight-team Maine state tournament in Bangor next week.

‘Next generation’ leads Bangor on American Legion title quest

...But the lower half of the lineup also played a pivotal role in helping the Rams rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Falmouth 4-3 in the title game, with doubles by sophomore Zach Cowperthwaite and junior Tyler Parke igniting the two-run rally.

Barely a month later the foursome at the top of the batting order — Peter Kemble, George Payne, Derek Fournier and Nick Cowperthwaite — are off readying for the next stages of their lives, leaving the complementary cast from the spring to assume prime-time roles this summer as Bangor Coffee News begins its pursuit of a third American Legion state championship in four years.

That passing of the torch has gone rather smoothly so far, with the Comrades clinching first place in the final Zone 1 regular-season standings Tuesday night with a 13-1 victory over Post 51 of Oakland.

Bessey Motors outlasts Pastime in 16 innings for Zone 2 American Legion baseball title

...Of course, neither had to worry about the state tournament — both teams had secured tourney tickets by virtue of meeting in the Zone 2 final. But that didn't stop the two-top teams from playing 16 hard-fought innings, with Bessey eking out a 6-5 victory.

“We came in with the goal of wanting to win,” Bessey manager Shane Slicer said. “Being able to say you were the zone champs is something really special and our guys really wanted that.”

After a war of attrition with the teams knotted at five over the final seven-plus innings, Lucas Francis plunked Emery Chickering to lead off the bottom of the 16th. Blake Slicer pinch ran for Chickering, stole second and advanced to third when the throw down went into center field.

Hampden overpowers Brewer in Legion playoff opener

BANGOR - Brewer sent one of its aces to the mount in Jack Corey to kick off the Zone 1 Legion baseball playoffs Friday, but the No. 2 Hampden Riverdogs proved to be a formidable offensive challenge.

Hampden plated nine runs on the afternoon, with Nick Guerrette holding the Falcons to just one run en route to a 9-1 win. Brewer goes into the loser's bracket in the double-elimination tournament
