Where / Who are recruiting targets during July open period ?

Postby Tom Nolette » Thu Jul 13, 2017 3:43 am

Any of you know where UMaine staff is heading during the balance of July and the open periods ..

Who are their target recruits this summer ?

Regionally,
I'm sure they will pop in Basketbull events in Springfield, MA. but where else .. AAU nationals, Vegas , Peach Jam, etc ...

or are we chasing transfers and JC players?

UMaine men's basketball tracking two major high school prospects

ORONO - A lot of Maine's basketball history is built on the players who were homegrown in the state, and eventually went on to contribute to the UMaine program at the Division I level. The program often looks in-state for top talent, and it appears the team has two big names on its radar for the next couple of seasons.

A source indicated the Maine coaching staff is currently tracking Portland star Terion Moss alongside Oxford Hills' Matthew Fleming. The two were part of an AAU tournament in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the coaching staff was on-hand to watch them. They are expected to keep tabs on them throughout the upcoming school year and the rest of the summer.

Coach O'Brien was at all the games this weekend for Blue Wave (Terion Moss - Portland 2018) and BBN ( Matt Fleming- Oxford Hills 2019) and others as well .. Ben Onek #24 - Deering 2019 is one to keep an eye on. Lefty, high IQ, making strides every day .. and other potential to raise their play.

MBR was there to video games ( which we're posting in full)...

Terion Moss - Portland 2018 Here is the last game https://vimeo.com/225923391 for Blue Wave , Sunday 8 am tip ... After a slow 1st half, BW controlled tempo and got what they wanted offensively .. Moss can get wherever he wants with the ball, finishes well, excellent court vision and a leader on the floor .. he usually plays all 32 mins. for the BW .. He needs to continue to improve on perimeter shot and continue on path he is getting stronger..

Matt Fleming 2019 is a higher level prospect .. He joined the BBN squad for July period and is coming off the bench . His length, IQ high on the court. Rebounds well and his biggest attribute is shooting the 3 ball. He needs to get stronger and play more against better competition .. here is game replay https://vimeo.com/226060910 vs eventual tournament champs DC blue Devil

Both players , as all maine players , should consider prep to offset the Maine HS disadvantages ... level of competition and mature more physically

Tom: Your last paragraph above is oh so true. Most college D-1 recruiters don't want Maine kids to go the prep school route that they are interested in because they get to be seen by more D-1 teams during their prep school play and may project higher then the schools that are recruiting the Maine kids.

1 spot for incoming freshman ... target appears to be : Breyon Jackson .. comments from NERR on Jackson in Aug 2016 ...
The other post option is Breyon Jackson, a 6-foot-8 southpaw from the Cincinnati area whose strong body and rugged mentality are reminiscent of Jarrell Brantley, who was named CAA Rookie of the Year last year at the College of Charleston after a post-graduate year at Notre Dame.

Maybe Walsh should head to the Sudan to recruit. I just read an informative article on the great manure Bol and his son Bol Bol. I hope he read the same article and booked his ticket to the Sudan. Imagine getting another hall if famer like manute Bol to play at Maine. Anyone know who recruited Maunte? What college? I bet Bcbc doesn't even know. The answer is below. Anyway. I have a few other thoughts.

Answer: Cleveland State.

Cleveland State recruited him but he never played there and Cleveland State got suspended for 2 yrs for illegal recruiting by the NCAA.

Remember Manute playing for U of Bridgeport in the mid 80's and ESPN would give him a lot of coverage b/c of his height. His wing span was 8 6" and his reach was 10' 5", that is frigging unreal. Not sure about the hall of fame part although his greatest accomplishment in the NBA was his shot blocking where he had over 2,000 blocks and is the only player to have more blocks than points. Remember he was a great ambassador for his home country of Sudan and did a lot to help improve conditions in his native land before his passing in 2010.

Speaking of 7' centers at UMaine who was the African born player in the 90's that had enrolled at Maine but then declined and I think he had a brother that played D1 as well???

They weren't related. One was Mamadou N'Diaye and the other was N'diaye N'diaye. Both were over 7 ' and were coming to Maine. BUT, Rudy resigned and took the job at Northeastern, Mike LaPlante(who recruited them both) was passed over to be head coach in favor of Coach G, and the two decommitted. One ended up at Auburn with Coach LaPlante was an all SEC performer and the #15 pick in the draft of the Denver Nuggets. The other ended up at Delaware and never really amounted to much.

This also caused John Gordon to transfer to Delaware. While Coach G did well after he took over, I wonder what the future would have been had Coach LaPlante been hired---we keep the 7' twin towers, John Gordon, together wi th Alan Ledbetter and others.

Who knows..............
