Augusta survives Franklin County after 11 innings

AUGUSTA — After spending 11 long innings behind the plate, Augusta catcher Mark Buzzell wanted to go home and have dinner with the family.

A weary and frustrated Buzzell decided to step up and put an end to Tuesday's American Legion Zone II baseball playoff game at muggy and hazy Morton Field.

He ripped a double to right field in the bottom of the 11th inning, sending home Ryan Sinclair, who got on due to an error, for the winning run to give third-ranked Augusta a 3-2 victory over sixth-ranked Franklin County.

“Obviously, I had calmness the whole game. I was ready to go home,” Buzzell said. “Getting tired. We all were, so someone needed to do something, and I have been struggling this year, so I went out with a clear head and just hoped for the best. Survived another day, ready for tomorrow.”

Augusta ousts Franklin in extras in Zone 2 American Legion playoffs
Buzzell's 11th-inning double lifts Elks to 3-2 quarterfinal victory.

...“What a nerve-wracking game,” coach Tim Rodrigue said. “I was thinking, I’ve got to worry about pitching if we happen to advance, the pitching rules are in force, and with nine-inning games, I’ll tell you, it was a chore.”

So was just escaping with the win. Augusta took a 2-0 lead in the third on a Sinclair double, but lost the edge in the top of the fourth when Miles Pelletier’s two-run single evened things back up.

Then, for six innings, nothing. Both teams had chances, but both also made the clutch plays in the field necessary to force the game deeper into extras

Rogers Post outlasts Locke Mills

AUBURN — Nick Hathaway can count the number of times he's pitched this season on one hand. But the fact that it's a steady hand is the reason he got called into a crucial spot late in Tuesday night's Zone 2 playoff quarterfinal.

Hathaway snuffed out an eighth-inning Locke Mills rally, and Jarod Norcross Plourde had the key hit as Rogers Post 153 held off its pesky opponent, 8-5, at Austin Field.

No. 4 Rogers (13-6) advances to face top-seeded Bessey Motors in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. No. 5 Locke Mills finishes its season at 9-10.

With Rogers holding a tenuous 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth, Hathaway entered the game in relief of starter Tyler Libby with runners on first and third and two out. Locke Mills had already scored two in the inning.

Top-seeded Bessey Motors comes from behind to beat Gardiner

...Instead, Gardiner had to battle top-seeded Bessey Motors for nine innings, and that upset bid came up short. No. 1 Bessey Motors scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to rally past No. 8 Gardiner 9-7 at Tim Bryant Memorial Field.

"Coach (Shane) Slicer and I talked before the game started that a team like ours can come in any day and show up and stress out a team just like their's," Gardiner manager Russell Beckwith said.

Stress Bessey Motors out is just what Gardiner (1-18) did right off the bat. Kolton Brochu hit a one-out double in the top of the first, and Nick Sanborn tripled in two runs three batters later for an early lead.
