Yarmouth’s quest for perfection denied by Kennebunk’s ‘Shutdown D’

PORTLAND—It was a defensive effort without peer.

A nearly perfect effort which squashed the dreams of a perfect season.

Saturday morning at Fitzpatrick Stadium, Yarmouth and Kennebunk’s girls’ lacrosse teams squared off in the Class B state final for the third year in a row and the Rams not only managed to repeat as champions, they did so by doing the unthinkable, holding the powerhouse Clippers’ offense in check for 50 minutes.

From the moment Yarmouth junior Eva Then had a shot denied in the third minute right through the final horn, the seemingly invincible Class B North champions could only shake their head and wonder why they couldn’t solve Kennebunk’s defense.

Kennebunk edges Yarmouth

...“We have a great offense, but our defense is where we’re strongest,” Kennebunk coach Annie Barker said. “They work really well together, and they’re just resilient.”

Leah Dumas and Erin Groton scored first-half goals for the Rams (13-2), who added one from captain gabby Fogg in the second and held on at the end against yarmouth’s furious attempt at a comeback.

“We started off slow, and then we just didn’t put it in the back of the net,” Yarmouth coach Dorothy Holt said. “Coming from behind is tough, but we rallied, we showd that we could. We just needed five more minutes.”

Kennebunk repeats as Class B state champ, 5-4
The Rams get two goals from Leah Dumas and Erin Gorton and hold off previously unnbeaten Yarmouth to keep the title.

...“There’s nothing more satisfying than coming off this field, having nobody believing in you except for the girls around you, and proving them wrong,” Kennebunk junior midfielder Hallie Schwartzman said.

The Rams (13-2) never trailed against a Yarmouth team (15-1) that had beaten them 7-3 on a rainy day in late May. Beneath overcast skies, Kennebunk put into action lessons learned from the earlier loss, showing more patience on offense and clogging the middle on defense.

“We studied the film when we played them last and we looked at all the things that we needed to fix,” said Kennebunk senior goalie Mallory Burchill, who made five of her seven saves after intermission. “I think they were frustrated because we figured them out a little bit. They tended to plant people in the middle and we figured out how to work around that.”
