COLBY: MEN'S CREW HAS EIGHT ON NIRC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Roger Stone was selected to the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) All-Stewards Team and the men's crew had eight rowers earn NIRC academic honors.

Coaches are able to nominate one student-athlete per program for additional recognition. The All-Stewards Team goes to captains, outstanding oarsmen and women, team leaders, or other key contributors of their program.

Ethan Ashley, Fred Bower, Tim Harris, Henry Holtzer, Makoto Kinoshita, Christopher Marcello, Allyson Redhunt, and Christian Papadellis made the all-academic team.

Rowers needed at least a 3.35 grade point average, be at least sophomore standing, and transfers must have completed at least one year at the current institution.

Waynflete graduate on verge of national title in college rowing
Olivia Stockly, whose love of the sport came from her family, is a key member of a Bates team ranked No. 1 in Division III.

Olivia Stockly, a Waynflete High graduate from Cumberland and a Bates College junior, was born to row.

“My mom rowed throughout high school and college,” Stockly said. “And then she became the coach (at Waynflete). Then my brother, who is a couple years older than me, joined the team and everything sort of fell in line, and I started to row and ended up falling in love with the sport.”

Stockly’s sister, Savannah, also attends Bates, and is one of the main reasons Stockly will be in the women’s varsity eight boat in the NCAA Division III championships Friday in Mercer, New Jersey.

COLBY: GARRETT TAKES 17TH IN HAMMER THROW AT NCAA MEET

GENEVA, Ohio -- Colby College's Michaela Garrett closed out her collegiate throwing career by taking 17th place in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute.

Garrett had a best toss of 165 feet, 9.75 inches on her second throw of three. She threw 164-10.5 on the first toss and had a foul on her third attempt. The top nine of 22 moved on to the championship round.

Garrett owns the school record with a throw of 174-7 and she would have needed to break the record to advance. The ninth-place toss in the two flights was 175-3.25. Garrett, a two-time NESCAC champion in the hammer throw, was the lone participant from the conference.

University of Texas at Tyler's Whitney Simmons dominated the event with a championship record throw of 210-01. The runner-up in the competition had a throw of 192-0.5.
