COLBY: RUGBY PLAYER WINS TACKLE AWARD; NATIONAL TOURNEY JUNE 3-4

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College men's rugby co-captain Quill Yates '17, who will lead the Mules in the upcoming national championship tournament, won the National Small College Rugby Organization's (NSCRO) Tackle of the Year Award.

A video was submitted to NSCRO that featured two perfect tackles from Yates. The first took place in a fall season playoff game against Tufts University when Yates lined up a charging Jumbo back to make the tackle. The second came earlier in the season during a home game against the University of Maine-Orono.

Yates was selected by a NSCRO committee that reviewed a shortlist of excellent tackles. The committee's criteria was to select the tackle with the best form. Yates demonstrated perfect form by staying low, hitting with his shoulder, lifting the opposition's leg, and maintaining safe head positioning.

Winning the award, Yates won a Rhino Vortex Elite game ball and a NSCRO T-shirt. The Colby men's rugby team won a Rhino Senior Tackle Ring.

Yates is currently practicing with the men's 7s team as they prepare for the 2017 National Small College Rugby 7s Championship on Saturday and Sunday, June 3-4, at Philadelphia's Talen Energy Stadium.

Colby, Duke University, Babson College, St. Mary's College (Md.), Solano Community College, Christendom College, New Mexico Highlands University, and University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point will compete at the tourney.

The eight teams will be divided into two pools of four and each squad will play three matches Saturday. The top two teams in each pool advance to Sunday's championship bracket. The bottom two teams will play in a consolation bracket.

The Mules will play Christendom at 8:40 a.m. Saturday, New Mexico Highlands at 11:20 a.m., and Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 1:20 p.m.

Colby advanced to the national tourney by winning a regional at Plattsburgh State.
