COLBY: MURAD SET TO OPEN PLAY AT NCAA TENNIS TOURNEY THURSDAY

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Colby College senior Vlad Murad will be tested by a talented first-year player from the University of Chicago when the NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships start Thursday.

Murad will play Erik Kerrigan at 11 a.m. at the The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., in an opening round match. A victory for Murad gets him to the round of 16 and clinches an All-American honor. The winner moves on to play either seventh-seeded Kai Yuen Leung of Skidmore College or Emory University's Jonathan Jemison at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Murad, playing singles at the NCAA tourney for the first time, has doubles experience at nationals.

Murad has played well at the end of the season, taking a 6-4, 6-2 win over NCAA participant Luke Tercek of Bowdoin College. Murad has even been impressive in defeat, falling 6-4, 6-4 to NCAA top-seeded Lubomir Cuba of Middlebury College.

Murad is 17-4 in singles play and finished the year 17-6 in doubles. He has 94 career wins for the Mules at 44-21 in singles and 50-23 in doubles.

MURAD FIRST COLBY ATHLETE TO EARN ELITE 90 HONOR

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Men's tennis player Vlad Murad (Bacau, Romania) became the first Colby College student-athlete to earn the Elite 90 Award from the NCAA for academic achievement.

Murad, who is at the NCAA Division III Individual Championships, has the highest cumulative grade point average of all the men's tennis players competing at nationals Thursday to Saturday. He was given the award at Wednesday night's banquet before the opening day of play.
