Coach, If you aren't already, you need to get on Twitter. If you are really gung ho about verbal commits, etc , that is the #1 place to find them. The players aren't restricted. It is very common to see tweets from athletes saying something like " blessed to receive an offer from the University of XXXXXXX".. or " blessed to be continuing my career at the University of XXXXXXX "... just search for stuff involving UMaine and you will find a lot of info.

Re: CIM's Latest Blog:Lee Preps 6'9" M. Antoms signs with UM

LEE PREP'S 6'9" Miks Antoms signs at UMAINE

UMaine has now signed 3 former Lee Prep school players under the current regime's program as they had Miks Antoms from Lativa sign with the Bears today.

Iljia Stojiljkovic 6'7 junior forward from Serbia signed two years ago and last season 6'5" sophomore guard Dusan Majstovic who transferred from LaSalle is also from Serbia.

6'0" point guard junior (probable red shirt to get his junior year back because only played in 7 games last season) Aaron Calixe from Massachusetts also played at Lee Prep and was signed under Ted Woodward's last year. So Maine has 4 former Lee Prep Players on their roster for next season, having signed a Leeer each of the past 4 seasons.

Having watched his individual video (4:37 minutes 5 times) from NERR on the latest Lee Academy Prepper 6'9" 230lb Miks Antoms from Latvia he is a very good signee as he is very good around the basket with his moves and footwork. Can dunk easily on post ups, powers well, can shoot the 15 foot jump shot and in shot.

He averaged 18.1 ppg and 8.4 rebounds per game for Lee. He had a game high 28 ppg. So he can score.

Good passer on the inside-outside pass when he is double teamed, recognizes that quickly and gets the ball to the open man for a 3 or the cutter to the hoop. Very willing to get ball to open teammate when doubled down on.

Good aggressive defensive and offensive rebounder. Willing to battle for the ball.

Good footwork, not real quick but average foot speed, but solid post up player certainly will force the down team in America East game.

One on one on the block is very patient knows how to take his time and get his defender in the air before he leaves the floor for a dunk or power layup shot. Used ball and head fakes and combo's. Knows the 3 second rule as he didn't rush his shot. Didn't force things. Finally, a basketball player who really knows how to play basketball from the shoulders up and he's a post player. He let the game come to him he didn't try to take himself to the game. Caught ball, read the situation and then reacted to what the defense gave him.

Has a good left hand when forced to go that way from the block.

Knows when to come from the block to set good BIG man screens on perimeter players and knows how to roll to the hoop for the pass and certainly knows how to finish.

Defensively, knows how to block shots correctly, waiting for ball to leave shooter's hand before he tries to block the shot.

Question marks, no indication on his foul shooting ability but does get to the line from the block.

Best inside man that Maine has recruited as BZ said since Ali Fraser.

Doesn't need much development or coaching from the offensive side of things, looks ready to go to me.

Just needs playing time and needs to be used offensively on the block. Much more effective on the block then Eke or Eze right now. Not as athletic, but by far way ahead fundamentally on the offensive side of things.

Has good soft hands, catches the ball well, can put it on the floor to try to gain a better shooting spot in the power alley.

Question mark is his defensive skills guarding a player with the ball and without the ball in the post or on the outside.

Excellent recruit, smooth moves, well coordinated and great that Maine got a good solid BIG and not another guard. Now have 10 guards and 5 front court players, 3 forwards and 2 BIGS back to hoop players.

Any scholarships remaining?

Can see Antoms starting right away, IF AND THIS IS A BIG IF, IF Maine really USES HIM and GETS HIM THE BALL on the block more than they have or did for Gloger as a junior or a senior, Eke or Eze as freshmen.

Better right now than any back-to-basket player that Maine has had in the past 3 seasons. SO THEY MUST USE HIM. JUST GET HIM THE BALL AND IF THE DOUBLE COMES HE WILL BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE IT AND GET THE BALL TO THE OPEN 3 POINT SHOOTER OR THE CUTTER TO THE HOOP.

Very surprised that he was still available this late in the recruiting process. Great positive body language. Never over or under reacted at all. Just played and played hard and with a passion.

BANGOR DAILY NEWS HAS GOT THIS, BUT NOTHING FROM UMAINE goblackbears.com and no quotes from Walsh yet, until future acceptance by UMaine.

Re: CIM's Latest Blog: Lee Preps 6'9" M. Antoms signs at UMa

UMaine Men: Inside-Outside? Just for Protecting the Rim?

With the UMaine Men's Program in a pressure situation to WIN OR BE GONE and turn around the 17-74 - 3 year record has finally gone and recruited and offered BIGS. 6'9" 230lb plusers.

Just signed 6'9" 230lbs Miks Anthoms from Lee Prep and Serbia and have offered 6'8" 225lbs. high school senior from Texas Zach McFarland who is scheduled to visit Maine this weekend.

Add them that is if McFarland signs a scholarship, IF ONE IS AVAILABLE, to 6'8" 230lb center Vincent Eze, 6
7" forward Mainer Andrew Fleming. 6'6" Ilker Er and 6'7" Ilija S. gives Maine 6 front courters, 3 forwards and 3 centers.

But Maine still is very much guard oriented with 10 of the 16 players on the roster at this second. (If there is a scholarship available for McFarland and that he signs)

Now there are these important questions that will be needed to be answered correctly now that they have 2 more BIGS. (if McFarland signs)

1. Will Maine go inside more to go outside more?
2. How will they do it?
3. What type of offensive set will they use to get the ball inside?
4. Will they catch, face look inside first when catching the ball on the perimeter around the 3 point line before doing anything else?
5. Or are the BIGS going to be just rim protectors and defensive rebounders?
6. If they go inside first can they go 8-8 in the conference and possibly win a tournament game?
7. Will going 8-8 in conference save this Coaching Staff's jobs?
8. Can Maine improve their 2016-17 overall shooting percentages--40% from the floor, 65% from the line and 30% from beyond the arc?
9.Will Maine go back to using 10 plus players double figure minutes or will they use just 7 or 8 and keep their best players, Myers, Er, Antom's and Fleming on the floor for 30-35 minutes?
10. Who, the players or the coaches (A set inside-outside system) determine who shoots, when they shoot and where they shoot from?

What do you think?

Laia Sole moves up in team and conference RPI's

Laia Sole 6'2 post player who announced last Month that she wanted to transfer and not only has she done so but has moved up in team and conference RPI.

UMaine was 128 in the final ncaa.com RPI team rankings and she is moving up 4 spots to 124 Duquense 18-16 and got to the finals of the A10 Tournament. She is also moving up in conference RPI. She is moving up 10 positions from the end-of-season realtimerspi.comconference RPI rankings from the 22nd ranked America East Conference to number 12 ranked Atlantic 10 Conference.

Sole joins 3 UMaine men's transfers a year ago IN MOVING UP IN TEAM RPI RANKINGS FROM UMAINE as 3 of the 5 men's players also moved up from the begining of last season rankings. Maine men were 346th. The men's players had a much better opportunity to move up from 346 then Sole did from the women's 128 RPI. The men went to 46 VCU, 56 Colorado and 199 Rider.

Also, her older sister Judith, who will be a senior next season, while Laia has to sit out next year because of the transfer, is a member of the Duquense team in Pittsburgh.

This certainly did not hurt decision to make this move with her sister on the roster. Her sister, Judith, was a junior forward where she averaged 1.3 ppg, 1.2 rpg and 5.5 minutes pg in 13 game appearances

It is interesting that Maine's senior 5'10' guard T. Sutton transferred to UMaine from Duquense 2 years ago.

For Further information on Sole's transfer go to todays (4/25/17) Bangor Daily News Sports page.

Coach, why do you continually put so much emphasis on conference RPI? America East , with only 1 exception I can remember , is and likely always will be a 1 bid league to the NCAA tournament. It makes no difference how good or bad the top 2 or 3 teams are, AE is just never going to get 2 in, so why worry so much about what RPI standing they have? What am I missing?

thebam: I agree with your post bam.

Just post the RPI's for information to interested mbr readers. Like to use RPI's for comparisons within and without the AE teams and conference to the other 350 teams and 31 conferences especially in individual players who transferred out of Maines M & W programs,

You are not missing anything.

The RPI's are just for info & comparisons that is all, nothing else. To me, RPI's are colleges version of the mpa Maine HS's Heal Points for individual team's strengths and ranking.

Example: Of the 5 men's transfers last spring 3 moved up (1 went JUCO and the other to D-2) considerably from UMaine's pre-season ncaa.com's ranking of 346 to VCU 36, Colorado 56 and Rider 199.

Of the women's 5 transfers only 1 has signed at a D-1 school (1 signed at D-2 school) also moved up by the end-of-season ncaa.com's RPI rankings from UMaine 128 to 124 Duquense.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: CIM's Latest Blog: Another small guard signs @ UMaine m

Postby bcbc55 » Sat Apr 29, 2017 10:02 pm

UMaine Men signs another small guard. BZ posted that 5'10" JUCO (Sheridan Junior College) transfer Celio Arujao from the Boston area is reportedly has committed to the University of UMaine men's basketball program. A program that is in need of BIGS now ups it's tota lof guards to 10.

Arujao fills one of the two transfers 6'2" Austin Howard an off guard seniorJUCO transfer and walk on 6'0" Ryan Bernstein a point guard who is going to transfer. This makes Howard the 8th player to leave the men's program since last spring. Both Howard and Benstein were important players in last seasons tough 6-25 season as both started at times. Bernstein at point and Howard played both guard positions at different times. Senior guard Troy Reid-Knight who sat out last year with an injury has also left the program.

Maine has signed 2 new players for next year who will be eligible immediately as one, Arujao who is a JUO transfer and 6'9" 230lb Miks Antoms a prep school post graduate student will be ready to go for next year unless one or both of them are red-shirted.

UMaine men now have 1 scholarship remaining and their roster currently is at 15. 12 scholarship players and 3 walk ons.

10 of the players are guards, 3 are forwards and 2 are centers.

By Linquist's post Maine men have 6 offers out. 2 guards, 2 forwards and 2 centers. Arujao was not listed with the 2
guards Linquist posted.

So based on Linquist' posts about 6 offers out 2 of which are guard offers and BZ's post about C.Arujao committing to Maine and blackbearsfan's post stating Howard transferring, Maine is still over loaded with guards and real thin on BIGS as they have twice as many guards as they have front courters 10 to 5 at the moment.

Thanks to all three MBR posters above keeping us informed and updated as what is going on at UMaine. In the past 2 years between the men's and women's basketball programs they have had 13 players leave the programs (Men 8 (5 last year and 3 this year and women 5 this year) and 8 transfers in (men 6 and women 2) so many moves they might need a "Moving Company".
