UMaine Football Ring of Honor:: Mike Flynn to be inducted

Postby Tom Nolette » Sat Dec 31, 2011 9:26 am

Former UMaine football coach, administrator Harold Westerman dies at 94
from BDN

ORONO, Maine – Harold Westerman was known as one of the architects of the Wing-T offense which combined a power running game with clever misdirection plays or counters.

The Wing-T and his prowess as a defensive coach enabled Westerman to post a career coaching record at the University of Maine of 80-39-7.

Westerman, who went on to serve as the athletic director at Maine, has died at the age of 94.

Westerman is just one of four members of the Black Bear Football Ring of Honor, being inducted in 2007.

Westerman, known to many as “Westy,” devoted 33 years to UMaine as an assistant coach (1949-50), head coach (1951-66) and athletic director (1967-82).

...Flynn joins receiver Thurlow Cooper, linebackers John Huard and Chris Keating and head coach Harold Westerman in the Ring of Honor, which was established in 2005.

“Mike Flynn’s accomplishments at the University of Maine and in the NFL speak for themselves,” former UMaine head coach Jack Cosgrove said in the release. “Flynn made a career out of showing those who thought he couldn’t, that he could. His achievements at the highest level of our game are impressive. His NFL career remains the longest of any Black Bear and he still holds the distinction of being the only Black Bear to start in and win a Super Bowl.”

Flynn was a four-year starter at UMaine and earned All-Yankee Conference first-team honors as a senior after third-team recognition as a junior.
