The University of Maine men’s hockey program has received two National Letters of Intent from European forwards Emil Westerlund of Sweden and Adrian Holesinsky of Slovakia during the spring signing period.

The signing of the two players gives coach Red Gendron an incoming class of eight — four forwards, three defensemen and a goaltender — all of whom will join the program this fall.

Westerlund and Holesinsky will look to give the Black Bears some more scoring punch to complement last year’s productive freshman class that produced 79 points.

Former hockey player, actor remembered by former UMaine teammates

Mike Mantenuto accomplished a lot in his 35 years of life.

The former University of Maine hockey player was found dead last week in a parking lot at a Washington state park. The Kings County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that the death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was a married father of two.

According to a report on TMZ, Mantenuto’s father, Joseph, said his son may have been haunted by his experiences in Iraq and Syria.

Maine Recruit Tralmaks Finds Groove in USHL Playoffs - http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2 ... -Finds.php … @MaineIceHockey

...A big left wing who stands at 6-foot-3, Tralmaks fits the bill of players recruited by Maine head coach Red Gendron and his staff.

“I’m a power forward. I like to hit. I like to play with the puck a lot. I like to make skilled plays. I like to go to the net and be in front of the net. It’s where I score most of my goals,” he said.

The one knock on Tralmaks has always been his skating, but it’s a part of his game that he’s committed to improving as he embarks on the next chapter of his hockey career.

“Skating is my biggest issue for now. It’s never been good for me but I’ll do everything in my power to improve it this summer,” said Tralmaks, who will head to Orono in July.

Former goalie Alfie Michaud offered assistant hockey coaching job at UMaine

... Michaud, 40, backstopped the Black Bears to their last NCAA championship in 1999, being named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament. He won 28 games that season and had a 2.32 goals-against average.

During his career at UMaine, the Selkirk, Manitoba, native appeared in 98 games and notched 60 wins with a 2.82 GAA and an .891 save percentage.

After UMaine, Michaud enjoyed a 13-year pro career which included two games with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. He is the owner and coach of Dream Catcher’s Hockey, which offers private lessons and coaching instruction, and he owns RISE Sport Testing, which supplies developmental testing to athletes in a variety of sports.

Michaud lives in Vienna, Maine, with his wife, Addie, and their three daughters.

Michaud looking forward to challenge as full-time UMaine hockey assistant

...The former University of Maine goalie led the Black Bears to their second and last NCAA championship in 1998-99, being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Now Michaud will have an opportunity to help head coach Red Gendron and associate head coach Ben Guite return the program to prominence after he was named a full-time assistant coach on Friday, replacing Jay Leach.

Leach resigned in April after four seasons. Leach and Guite joined Gendron in his first season at the helm. Leach earned $91,800 per year.
