Amy Vachon Named Interim UMaine Women’s Basketball Head Coach for Next Season

...Richard Barron announced today his medical condition will keep him from coaching the UMaine women’s basketball team next season.

At a news conference, this afternoon, Amy Vachon was named the interim coach for another year. But it doesn’t mean Barron is going away…

...Creech said at the news conference that Barron “is still under contract” and could return to coach again someday.

Barron makes $150,000 per year and that will expand to $155,000 in July.

But Creech also said “like any university employee, he has medical leave built up as one of the benefits of being a university employee and he’s now in that stage.”

Creech noted that since there was so much uncertainty about Barron’s health during the season, he didn’t feel it was right to appoint Vachon as the interim head coach at that time.

“Now that the season is over and we know more, it is appropriate to give her the interim head coach title. That allows her the full authority to recruit and do everything any head coach would do on behalf of the program,” said Creech.

Vachon will make $100,000 as the interim head coach after earning $42,864 as the associate head coach.

... Vachon said she has verbal commitments from other players who are expected to join the program during the upcoming NCAA signing period (April 12 to May 17).

“We have a great group of kids returning; seven kids who are really bought into the program, three returning starters,” Vachon said. “We have (one player) signed from Massachusetts and a couple more committed.

“I’m not worried about (filling the roster). We’ve always been about getting the right kids for our program. We’re not just going to take kids just to fill a spot.”

Vachon’s coaching staff consists of Edniesha Curry (two years with the program), former Maine player Samantha Baranowski (one year) and Jhasmin Player (three years over two stints).

Married with 3 young kids. Now that there is an answer hopefully that leads to a full recovery or at least a way to control the issues and provide a return to health and happiness.

Richard Barron heads to UCLA for corrective surgery
Bill Green, WCSH

Bangor, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- University of Maine Women's Basketball Coach took a sabbatical during the 2016-17 season. A rare malady known as a hole (dehiscence) in the Superior Semicircular Canal (inner ear) has been diagnosed as the cause.

The dehiscence drastically affected Barron's hearing. He heard noises at different pitches, extraneously noise was amplified and couldn't be filtered out. Particularly maddening were noises from within his body such as chewing.

It took Barron three months and thousands of dollars to travel the country finding the diagnosis. "My world was ending. I thought I was dying," Barron told NEWS CENTER.

UMaine coach plagued by medical mystery finally gets answers

...He was returning to Maine early Friday morning.

So they did the CT scan on Thursday and she called him back with the news he had been waiting to hear for almost five months.

“There was a small hole, the size of a pin, right below the brain,” he explained. “It is rare and has only been diagnosed for 20 years.”

“That was a pivotal moment,” said Barron. “I called [UMaine athletic director Karlton Creech]. I was giddy. I was so happy. I told him I had a hole in my head!”
