Ideal Conference Realignment for UMaine Athletics

Let’s have some fun and dream a little. I got this idea from reading the Boston Globe’s Bob Ryan lamenting about the return of the old Big East.

You’ve been put in charge of conference realignment for all Division I programs in the country.

For the sake of argument, let’s simply focus in on the who/what/why/where the University of Maine Men’s Football, Basketball and Baseball programs would be aligned. All schools in our new league must offer all three of those sports, and will be based on proximity, similar facilities, and traditions. Ten team conferences. Go.

Here’s my proposal: UMaine, UNH, UMass, URI, Holy Cross, Bryant , Sacred Heart (CT), Central Connecticut State, Wagner College, and St. Francis (NY)

Our new league stretches from Maine to NYC, has ten schools that all offer the “Big 3” sports, have similar facilities, and are all accessible by bus. All we need now is a name for our conference. Let’s GO!!

UMass would love this league...

Too many private schools, too many crappy football programs, and St. Francis doesn't have football.

Albany, URI and Stony Brook and hockey... Heck Delaware too even.
Some of the northern schools add Lax...face it, every school on this list would be more competive nationally in lax then baseball.

As long as we all agree I'll start making calls in the morning

spaced out that UNH doesn't have baseball, although St. Francis does indeed have football

To present a viable option for AD Creech to take to the NCAA Realignment board, the 10 schools must all have Football, Baseball and Basketball. I'll replace UNH with Fordham.

This thing is gaining traction.....

That's St. Francis of Pennsylvania. SFC Brooklyn doesn't have football.

No Vermont? I get the no football or baseball thing but it's not like they have anywhere else to go.

I'll take these ten:

Maine
New Hampshire
Vermont
Lowell
Northeastern
CCSU
Albany
Stony Brook
Delaware
Towson

Call it the new Yankee Conference. Add in Rhode Island and Villanova as football only members to make a nine team, eight game league. If UMass wants to go back to FCS, they'll make ten. If not, Fordham would be a nice addition.

Nice try but fantasy is not reality in this case. Good try though....

UMASS will remain in the FBS as will UCONN. I dont see UMAINE leaving the CAA for football. That is a conference where all their sports belong but apparently no one here believes that....

UMass is a flaming disaster in FBS. There time is running out. The reason no one believes that Maine belongs in the CAA , is because there isn't a single sane argument for it to happen. It makes no sense on any level. and here I was hoping your triumphant return would be one of a more sensible variety.
