Bowdoin: heehan's Double Overtime Game-Winner Sends Women's Hockey to NESCAC Semifinals

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Bowdoin women's hockey team punched its ticket to the NESCAC Semifinals after winning 1-0 in double overtime at Hamilton capping the longest game in program history.

The Polar Bears earned the six seed in the NESCAC tournament following a 12-8-4 regular season and 7-6-3 mark in conference play. The Continentals entered the game as the number three team in the conference at 14-7-3 (9-5-2 NESCAC). The two teams split their regular season series.

Game Highlights

Bowdoin dominated the first period of the game, taking the first 14 shots of the day. At the end of 20 minutes, the Polar Bears held a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. The most promising plays of the period came in 5-on-3 action and a shorthanded bid by Julie Dachille.
The Continentals found their footing and began to challenge Kerri St. Denis in net . While the Polar Bears controlled the opening eight minutes of the final frame, Hamilton bounced back and forced St. Denis to make several saves to preserve the scoreless tie.
Hamilton earned a power play with just over three minutes to play in regulation. St. Denis denied Sara Taffe a promising look with 1:45 remaining, allowing Bowdoin to successfully kill the penalty and force overtime.
St. Denis opened the first overtime period with a blocker save off a Kelli Mackey shot. The Continentals went on the power play midway through the period, forcing St. Denis to make several more quick saves. The sophomore turned away promising shots from the point and some close scramble rebounds.
Bowdoin's best chance came late in the frame as Dachille charged the net, causing a rebound to kick out to Maryanne Iodice. Iodice's shot missed wide.
In the second overtime, Bowdoin earned an early power play. Brigit Bergin fired a shot towards the high corner, but was denied by Sam Walther. St. Denis made several more saves at the goalmouth to extend the game.
After a back-and-forth period, Bowdoin got the game-winner 14:26 into the second extra session. Marissa Fichter won a race to the puck on the right dot and centered a pass across the zone to Maegan Sheehan on the back post, who dove to poke home the game-winning goal.
By the Numbers

St. Denis picked up the shutout victory behind a 41 save performance and over 94 minutes in net.
Walther made 49 stops, including 12 in the first overtime.
Bowdoin went 0-for-7 on the power play while killing off six Continental power plays.
Up Next

The Polar Bears move on to face top-seeded Middlebury on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Panthers will host the NESCAC Championship weekend as the highest tournament seed.

COLBY: Men's hockey player Burton gets tryout with Indy Fuel of ECHL

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College men's hockey player Jack Burton (Baltimore, Md.) signed with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL and is eligible to see game action Saturday night.

Indy will play host to Kalamazzo at 7:35 p.m. and will entertain Quad City on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The Fuel head to South Carolina to play two games next Friday and Saturday at Greenville, both starting at 7 p.m. Indy plays South Carolina next Sunday at 3:05 p.m.

Burton signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement and will play the five games over Colby's spring break. After the South Carolina contest, Burton will head back to Colby for the rest of his senior year.

"We're very excited to watch Jack begin his journey in professional hockey," Colby head coach Blaise MacDonald said. "He has worked incredibly hard over his four years at Colby to become a premier defenseman in this league and he is very deserving of this opportunity."

The ECHL is considered Double-A hockey and is one step below the American Hockey League (AHL). The league was formerly called the East Coast Hockey League, but changed the name to ECHL in 2003 after expansion all over the country. The ECHL currently has 28 teams.

Burton, who is 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, was one of the top players in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. He made the All-NESCAC First Team after finishing second on the Mules in scoring with six goals and 16 assists for 22 points. Burton, who had a team-high five power play goals, finished his career with 18 goals and 34 assists for 52 points.
