COLBY: SOFTBALL TEAM READY FOR 10 GAMES IN FLORIDA DURING BREAK

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Colby College softball team heads to Florida this weekend for 10 games to begin the 2017 season after significant improvements a year ago under second-year head coach Lisa-Ann Wallace.

Wallace helped the Mules go 15-15 overall and 6-6 in the NESCAC after the team went 11-18 and 4-6 in 2015.

Despite losing three senior captains (Tori Sansone, Emily Schatz, Katherine Zafirson) last May, Colby returns its pitching staff and a number of key players. Seniors Grace Farnkoff (Scarborough, Maine) and Robin Spofford (Cohasset, Mass.) will captain the team along with junior Kathleen Mason (East Sandwich, Mass.).

"The captains last year possessed strong leadership skills and created a program that held the players to the highest physical and mental standards on and off the field," Wallace said. "This boils down to the ability to focus and execute a plan that you know you are worthy of."

Colby will have two new assistant coaches to work with Wallace and second-year assistant Nancy Burgess. Bri Keenan, an assistant field hockey coach for Colby, helped Tufts University softball to three straight NCAA Division III Championships (2013-15). Noel Wees played softball at the University of Northern Colorado and has had assistant coaching stints with Colorado State and with Wallace at Bryant College.

"The addition of coaches that have been in their shoes not so long ago, and who have had tremendous success in very high academic settings, resonates with this group of players," Wallace said.

Another exciting development for the Mules this season is their new relationship with Rawlings.

"Rawlings is an outstanding company that provides top of the line gear, which will help us not only this year, but in the future with our camps, clinics, and recruiting," Wallace said.

Pitching

The Mules have a mix of experience and new talent in the circle this season. Returners Julia Saul (Palo Alto, Calif.), Wiley Holton (Dedham, Mass.), and Holly Lallis (Gladstone, N.J.) are joined by first-year pitcher Lucie Cunningham (Danville, Ky.).

Saul pitched in 19 games for the Mules in the 2016 season, making 16 starts and earned an 8-7 record. She completed seven games, had 67 strikeouts, and a 2.99 earned run average.

Holton made 13 appearances, including 11 starts last season, while earning four victories, seven complete games, and 44 strikeouts. Holton also did the job at the plate, finishing second on the team in batting average (.341).

Lallis returns after making 13 appearances last season, including two starts. She had a team-best 2.30 earned run average and a 3-2 record.

Infield

Seniors Robin Spofford (Cohasset, Mass.) and Katie McLaughlin (Glenburn, Maine) join junior Skylar Labbe (Danville, N.H.) and sophomore Paige Hartnett (Andover, Mass.) to encompass an experienced infield. Labbe had a big season a year ago, leading the team in batting average (.353) and committed just one error in 103 chances at catcher. Spofford (.280 batting average) returns at second base where she played in 29 games last season. McLaughlin is back at third base after batting .298, while Hartnett was tied for the team lead with McLaughlin in home runs (3) and was second in RBI (17).

Zena Robert (Fairfax Station, Va.) returns at catcher after playing in two games her sophomore year and first-year Ella Hommeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) joins the infield.

Outfield

Farnkoff and Mason return in the outfield and will be joined by newcomer Carly Swartz (North Reading, Mass.). Farnkoff finished the 2016 season with 20 hits, 10 runs, eight RBI and a .976 fielding percentage.

Seeing playing time in the infield and the outfield will be junior Vanessa Warshaw (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Dougherty (Dover, Mass.).

Schedule

After the 11 games in Clermont, Fla, Colby's home opener will be on Thursday, March 30, against Thomas College at 4:00 p.m. The Mules, in the first year on the new artificial turf surface in 2016, had a solid 9-6 record at home.

The Mules will face several non-conference opponents before jumping into NESCAC play against a formidable opponent, Tufts, on April 7-8. The team will hold a mentor meet and greet after the games April 8 in Medford, Mass.

Mason is in charge of community outreach programs this season. There will be special events held at all home games, including events focused on breast cancer, Waterville outreach and military appreciation.
