MEN'S SQUASH TEAM WINS FIFTH PLACE MATCH OVER AMHERST

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Colby College men's squash team is in the upper echelon of the New England Small College Athletic Conference after finishing fifth at the league championships on Sunday.

The Mules came into the weekend with the fifth seed in the 11-team tournament. Colby (12-10 overall) took a 6-3 win over sixth-seeded Amherst College in the fifth-place match.

First position player Will McBrian and second spot player Patrick McCarthy took care of business with 3-0 victories playing on Amherst's home courts.

Five of the nine matches went to five sets and the Mules won three. Fourth position player Hugh Doherty and Matt Epstein at the eighth spot both won the first two sets of their matches and then were forced to win in a fifth set.

Sam Hitt won the other 3-2 match at the ninth position, fighting back from a 2-1 set deficit. Jason Brodo needed four sets to win at the seventh spot for the Mules.

WOMEN'S SQUASH FINISHES SEVENTH AT NESCAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Colby College women's squash team came into the NESCAC Championships as the ninth seed and left taking seventh place after a 7-2 win over Tufts University on Sunday in the seventh and eighth place match.

The Mules, despite a 7-2 win over Tufts last weekend, never moved up in the national poll and stayed at 25th in the country. Colby took a 7-2 win over 24th-ranked Wesleyan on Friday and owns a second straight 7-2 victory against 19th-ranked Tufts.

Colby went 4-1 in 3-2 matches against Tufts. Devin Mullaney and Ren Robinson both fought back from 2-0 deficits for victories. Mullaney, playing the first position, won 11-3, 11-8, 11-4 over the final three sets. Robinson lost the second set 11-2 to fall behind 2-0, but went 11-3, 11-5, 11-4 over the final three sets.

Caroline Pelham came back after falling behind 2-1 in sets. After scoring just eight points in two losing sets, Pelham settled down and took 12-10 and 11-7 victories. Julianna Song had the other 3-2 victory at three, taking an 11-9 win in the fifth set.

Madiha Molani (two) and Lily Wain (eight) both won 3-1 matches, while Elise O'Brien was the lone winner in straight sets at nine.

COLBY MEN'S SQUASH EARNS VICTORY OVER BOWDOIN

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Will McBrian fought back from two deficits in his match at the first position for a 3-2 win to help the 23rd-ranked Colby College men's squash team beat 27th-ranked Bowdoin College on Friday.

McBrian fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 in sets before winning 11-3 and 11-5 in the final two sets.

Patrick McCarthy, Elliot Gross, Will Pepi, Matt Epstein, and Sam Hitt all won 3-0 matches for the Mules.

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The 25th-ranked Colby College women's squash team came one match away from an upset of 19th-ranked Bowdoin College in a 5-4 loss on Friday.

The Mules won matches six to nine in 3-0 victories. Caroline Pelham won her 10th match of the season at the sixth position, while Lily Wain moved to 19-6 on the season with a victory at seven. Ren Robinson and Elise O'Brien both had their 11th victories of the season.

COLBY: PEPI HAS LONE WIN FOR MEN'S SQUASH AT NATIONAL TOURNEY

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Will Pepi had the lone win for 23rd-ranked Colby College in an 8-1 setback to 18th-ranked Williams College in an opening round match in the Summers Cup at the College Squash Association Men's Team Championships on Friday at Harvard University.

Pepi won 11-9 in the fifth set to pull out a 3-2 victory at the fifth position. The meeting was closer than the final score indicates, with the Ephs winning five 3-1 matches.

Colby will play 22nd-ranked Dickinson College in a consolation round semifinal in the Summers Cup (teams ranked 17-24) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at MIT.
