Portland boys look to repeat as basketball tourney begins

One more?
Portland’s boys’ basketball team won the Class A state championship in 2014, lost in the state game in 2015, then last year, held off South Portland in a double-overtime epic in the inaugural Class AA championship contest.

The Bulldogs will be the top seed for the Class AA North tournament, which gets underway Thursday, although Portland has a bye into the semifinal round, which won’t be contested until next Tuesday in Augusta.

The Bulldogs finished the regular season 16-2 after losing at home to South Portland (74-69) and downing visiting Cheverus (69-46). In the loss, Portland trailed almost the whole way and despite 25 points from Terion Moss, 13 from Griffin Foley and 10 apiece from Pedro Fonseca and Clay Hardy, couldn’t quite catch up.

SJ Class AA North Boys' Preview: Eddies, Bulldogs stand out in loaded bracket

... Favorites: Portland, Edward Little

Portland's seniors will be looking to make it 4-for-4 in state championship game appearances, but it's underclassmen such as Moss and Foley who lead their mission of last year's title defense. Moss, a 5-foot-9 point guard, is one of the toughest matchups in the state because of his quickness, shooting and ball-handling skills.

EL handed the Bulldogs one of their two losses, 76-70, in December, and made things difficult for Moss at key moments in the game. The Eddies Their offense flows through Norcross Plourde and Iman, but Maiwen and junior Darby Shea are also capable of taking games over — Maiwen with his defense and above-the-rim play and Shea with his 3-point shooting.

Forecaster: local hoops teams chase a Gold Ball-Southern edition

Unfinished business
Last winter, the South Portland boys’ made a spirited playoff run and nearly upset powerhouse Portland in the inaugural Class AA state final, only to fall in double overtime.

Scarborough beats Bonny Eagle 51-30. Coach Conley has his team primed and ready and now he'll meet his former team South Portland and try to pull off the upset. I don't think the Red storm have enough talent to do it, but coach Conley will have them playing their best ball of the season.
