Perry sparks Hawks past rival Noble

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Casey Perry might be just a freshman, but the Marshwood High School striker knows how to finish. She scored a pair of second-half goals to power the No. 5 Hawks past No. 12 Noble, 2-0, in the first round of the Class A South girls soccer tournament on Monday.

“I kind of just finished (in the second half),” Perry said. “In the first half, I just didn’t really get the right touch on the ball. In the second half I just had more confidence and was able to touch the ball right and get it in the net.”

Windham tops Thornton Academy again
Hannah Kaplan scores two goals as the Eagles beat the Trojans 4-1 to advance to the Class A South quarterfinals to face No. 3 Cheverus.

... “(This year) was the first time we haven’t had a bye in years, so the kids were not ready to go home tonight,” said Windham Coach Deb Lebel.

“It made me super proud that they said, ‘No, we’re going to fight for this.’ ”

The game was tight for the majority of the first half, with each team controlling large chunks of time in windy conditions.

Windham, however, took control on goals by Kaplan and Lindsay Arsenault two minutes apart with 2:53 left before intermission.

“Scoring those two goals was extremely important,” said Kaplan. “It set the tone for the whole game for us.”

Waterville girls soccer continues tradition of excellence
Purple Panthers look to add to unbeaten season in playoffs.

... “It’s been great to have an undefeated regular season and to win the KVAC championship,” Waterville head coach Mark Serdjenian said, “but our work is ongoing and we look forward to the upcoming tournament.”

The Class B North tournament, at least for Waterville, begins this week. The squad enters as the No. 2 seed in the region, and will host Nokomis in the quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon at Webber Field.

As was the case with most of its opposition in 2016, Waterville had an easy time with Nokomis, beating the Warriors twice by a combined score of 8-1.

Winslow girls soccer advances with dramatic victory
Black Raiders sink John Bapst in penalty kick round.

ORONO — Kate Larsen came through late. Broghan Gagnon came through later. As a result, the Winslow girls’ soccer team is moving on by the slimmest of margins. And then some.

The ninth-seeded Black Raiders needed a second round of penalty kicks Monday to top No. 8 John Bapst, 3-2, and advance to the quarterfinals of the Class B North playoffs. Winslow will face top seed Hermon in the quarters.
