UMaine women’s hockey team beats No. 5 Boston College

... The Black Bears were able to get multiple goals, including scoring twice in the third period to shock BC 3-2 in a Hockey East women’s hockey game at Norway Savings Bank Arena on Saturday.

Vendula Pribylova provided the game-winning goal with 36.9 seconds left, re-directing in a point shot from Brittany Colton.

“The thought process was really just kind of get it to the net, don’t get it blocked,” Colton, a freshman, said. “I saw some teammates in front of the net, just shoot the puck, hope and pray that they get a stick on it. And they were in good position, so it just worked out.”

Box Score PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - The Black Bears struck early and had a two goal lead that they were unable to hold in the third period, as they lost to Providence 3-2 in regulation. The Black Bears saw two goals from Junior Forward Catherine Tufts, but Providence would make a comeback in the third.

Tufts' first goal came 16:26 into the first period unassisted on the play, giving Maine a 1-0 lead just before the first intermission. 3 minutes after intermission she would strike again with the help of Emilie Brigham 3:31 into the 2nd period to give Maine a 2-0 lead. Providence tried to mount a comeback in the 2nd period and came close, close enough that it required official review and was disallowed, giving Maine a 2-0 lead going into the third period.

Providence came into the period looking for the comeback, and it began 8:19 into the 3rd period on a power play as Madison Sansone was able to put one past Maine goaltender Carly Jackson, cutting the lead to one. Maine would hold that one-goal lead until the final two minutes when Providence would pull their goalkeeper to try and even the score, and just 2 seconds after the extra attacker jumped onto the ice, Providence scored the equalizer 18:07 into the period. Blair Parent was the scorer.

Just under a minute later 18:51 into the period Providence was able to ride the momentum of the equalizing goal and scored the go ahead goal from Whitney Dove, giving Providence a 3-2 lead. With 27 seconds left Maine attempted the extra attacker offense pulling Carly Jackson, but Maine was unable to get the equalizer and Providence would go on to win.

Carly Jackson's record falls to 1-6-0, though she made 29 saves in the contest, 10 of them in the final period of play. Alanna Serviss for Providence gets the win with a 21 save effort, giving her a 2-2-0 record. Maine's conference record falls to 1-4-0, overall to 2-7-0.

The Black Bears are back in action Sunday afternoon against Vermont at 2pm in Alfond Arena for a special Halloween-themed Trick'n'Cheer event with constume contests and trick-or-treating around the arena for fans.
