Paula Habel Named Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Paula Habel as assistant coach for the women's lacrosse team. Habel comes to Bowdoin with over a decade of collegiate coaching experience.

Most recently the head coach at Merrimack College, Habel returns to the NESCAC, where she served as an assistant coach for Colby from 2013-2015, helping the Mules qualify for the NCAA Tournament and earn a top-ten ranking each campaign.

Prior to Colby, Habel owned a consistent record of success leading Bridgewater State, Emerson, Allegheny and Plymouth State University. Her 2012 Bridgewater State team claimed the NEWLA Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. While at Allegheny, her squad reached the North Coast Athletic Conference playoffs in two of the three years while setting a school record for wins in a season (9). While with Plymouth State, the Panthers won the ECAC title and finish with a 13-5 record in 2005. A year later, that same Plymouth State program went to the NCAA Tournament, won Little East Conference regular season and tournament titles, and finished 13-6 overall.

Originally from Hingham, Massachusetts, Habel is a 2003 Cum Laude graduate of Bridgewater State with a degree in Communications. She received her master's degree in Educational Leadership from Plymouth State University in 2009. A decorated student-athlete, Habel was voted into the BSU Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2011.

Gombar Steps Down as Head Women's Lacrosse Coach

CASTINE, Maine – Sarah Gombar has stepped down as Maine Maritime Academy's Head Women's Lacrosse Coach. Gombar has accepted a position at Madonna University in her home state of Michigan, as the Assistant Director of Residential Life.

"I want to thank everyone at Maine Maritime Academy and the Castine community from the bottom of my heart, for all of their support and allowing me the honor of building this program," said Gombar. "Although this decision was extremely difficult, I know that this program is ready for a new chapter. There is an amazing group of women who are ready to lead this team to new heights and I couldn't be more proud to have been their coach."

Gombar was named Maine Maritime's first women's lacrosse coach in 2014 and led the Mariners as a club team in the same year. In 2015, in the first season of NCAA competition, Gombar led the Mariners to their first-ever win and coached two NAC All-Academic selections, and a NAC Woman of the Year nominee. In 2016, Gombar led the team to their second-straight IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad selection and brought in a recruiting class that included a NAC Rookie of the Week.

"I will forever be a Mariner and my support for this program and the Academy will never fade," Gombar added, "I feel honored to have worked with such an amazing group of students and be a member of the family that is Maine Maritime Academy. Teams come and go but family is forever so as I depart Castine there is a piece of my heart that I leave behind."

"I am incredibly grateful for the outstanding effort Sarah has given the Academy in getting this program off of the ground," said Director of Athletics, Steve Peed. "Coach G established a strong, positive culture in her locker room and has assembled a great corps of young leaders. She leaves behind a strong foundation for the program."

The search for the next head coach will begin immediately.
