Celtics' president Danny Ainge embracing expectation-filled summer

... Helping those fortunes along will be Boston's eight draft picks this summer, including three in the first round. The eight picks are Boston's most since 1987 when the draft had seven rounds.

It not only will provide the Celtics with bargaining chips for potential trades, but the ability to "draft and stash" young players If they want, Ainge said.

A lot will depend on what happens May 17 at the draft lottery. Boston owns the unprotected first-round pick of the Nets, which it picked up in the deal that sent Garnett and Pierce to Brooklyn in 2013.

NBA Draft Lottery 2016: Complete Breakdown Of Boston Celtics’ Odds

The Boston Celtics have a 15.6 percent chance of winning the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft when the draft lottery takes place Tuesday night.

Boston hasn’t owned the top pick since 1980, when it traded the selection, as well as No. 13, to the Golden State Warriors for center Robert Parish and the No. 3 pick, which turned out to be power forward

Kevin McHale. Parish and McHale each won three titles with the Celtics in the 1980s and made the Basketball Hall of Fame, so it worked out pretty well for Red Auerbach.

Will luck finally be on Boston's side at draft lottery?

Not that he felt like talking to anyone at that moment, particularly not San Antonio Spurs director of player personnel Sam Schuler, who was seated directly next to him and, understandably, could hardly contain his excitement when the Spurs secured the No. 1 pick -- or, more precisely, the right to draft Tim Duncan -- that the Boston Celtics were convinced was as good as theirs.

Twiss, the Celtics' jovial media relations czar who this year completed his 36th season on the job, was still trying to wrap his head around what happened. He recalls that, before the formal lottery drawing, NBA officials had conducted a pair of mock draws to demonstrate how the event would run. In the first mock, the Celtics secured picks Nos. 1 and 3. In the second, Boston emerged with picks Nos. 2 and 3. Twiss liked the consistency.

Then came the official draw.

Isaiah Thomas, Celtics land No. 3 pick, turn attention to what's next
Getting the No. 3 pick wasn't what the Boston Celtics had hoped for on Tuesday, but it can help get them where they want to go.

NEW YORK -- Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas said he was trying to channel his inner Brad Stevens when he rose from his seat during the 2016 NBA draft lottery Tuesday night and prepared to join the representatives from the other two teams that were among the final three to be revealed.

With Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca beaming from the front row, Thomas could hardly mask his own trademark smile. Standing on the side of the stage alongside Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown as ESPN's broadcast went to commercial, Thomas was confident that he had secured the No. 1 pick for a Boston team that has long been tormented by the lottery's pingpong balls.

"I was thinking, man, I think we're going to get the No. 1 pick," said Thomas. "That's just how things go in my life. I never put anything past it. I was thinking we were [No. 1]."
