Del Gallo and Luth to Lead USM Wrestling as 2015-2016 Team Captains

Del Gallo Enters Preseason Ranked Fifth Nationally at 149

GORHAM, Maine – Juniors Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) and CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) have been named captains of the 2015-2016 University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team. Under the direction of first-year head coach and former USM wrestling All-American Mike Morin, Southern Maine enters the 2015-2016 season ranked ninth in the in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Division III Poll released on October 27. The Huskies are set to kick off their season on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a dual match at home against Bridgewater State.

"Both Del Gallo and Luth were an easy choice for captains for the coaching staff," said Morin. "Both are extremely hard-workers on the mat, and excel in the classroom. They are some of the best student-athletes USM wrestling has ever seen. They both enter their junior seasons with sights to place high in the regional tournament and earn a spot on the podium at the NCAAs. Both Dan and CJ have demonstrated the commitment and dedication to be among the best of the country, and have themselves positioned to achieve their goals."

Coming off of a strong sophomore campaign, Luth, wrestling at 157, is a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American. During the 2014-2015 season, Luth posted a 27-9 overall record, winning six matches by fall and seven matches by technical fall en route to All-Region honors. Luth was also named honorable mention All-NEWA team.

Finishing fifth at the NCAA Regional tournament, Luth posted a 3-2 record with a win by fall and a pair of wins by major decision to earn his All-Region standing. With a career record of 54-19 over two seasons, Luth enters his junior season with a NEWA preseason ranking of fourth at 157 pounds.

USM's first NCAA Elite 89 Award winner, Del Gallo had a remarkable sophomore season culminating in a berth to the 2015 NCAA Division III National Championship. A philosophy major with a 4.0 grade point average, Del Gallo was presented with his Elite 89 Award during the national championship. The award, founded by the NCAA, is presented to the student-athlete who has reached the pinnacle of competition in his or her sport at the national championship, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. A standout in the classroom and on the mat, Del Gallo is a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American and a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete recipient.

During his sophomore season, Del Gallo excelled wrestling at 149 pounds earning All-Region honors finishing second in his division, highlighted by an upset win over top-seed Joey Gaccione of Johnson & Wales University in the championship semifinals. Del Gallo's entry into the NCAA National Championship tournament made his just the seventh Husky wrestler to do so, joining former USM standouts Adam Farrington (1999, 2001), Steve Valastro (2007), Mike Morin (2008, 2009, 2010), Matt Ulrich (2010), Billy Cole (2011) and Jon Deupree (2014, 2015).

Along with his All-Region and national academic recognition, Del Gallo was named to the All-NEWA first team. Del Gallo finished the 2014-2015 season with an outstanding 36-5 overall record and is 56-13 in his career. The Huskies' captain enters his junior captain ranked atop the standing in the NEWA preseason poll and is ranked fifth nationally in his weight class by Intermatwrestle.com.

Huskies Rumble to 25-24 Season-Opening Win Over Bridgewater State

GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) had an outstanding intercollegiate debut grappling his way to a match-winning pin in the final bout of the day as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied for a 25-24 win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a wrestling dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.
Competing in their season-opening match, the Huskies start their 2015-2016 season at 1-0. Bridgewater State drops its fourth straight match to fall to 0-4. It is the second straight match that the Bears have lost by a point.

The Huskies' trailed Bridgewater State 18-0 after the first three bouts. Freshman Dylan Nuttall (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) pinned Husky freshman Casey Abshire (Lowell, Mass.) in 4:04 to score the Bears' first points of the game. BSU took the next two matches with a win by forfeit and another pin.

Southern Maine got on the board with a 10-2 major decision victory at 149 pounds as rookie Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass.) defeated BSU sophomore Eric Kerr (Lynnfield, Mass.). Husky junior captain Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), ranked fifth nationally at 149 pounds wrestled up a class at 157 made it back-to-back wins, earning a win by fall over sophomore Matt Jiampetti (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek) in 4:27 to make is 18-10 in favor of the Bears.

The Huskies continued to roll in the 165 and 174 pound matches to take their first lead of the match 19-18. Junior captain CJ Luth (Milford, Conn.), a 2015 All-Region wrestler, opened his season with a dominating 17-0 technical fall win over BSU junior Anthony Cote (Danbury, Conn.), while junior Aaron Weiss (East Machias, Maine/St. Paul's School) earned a 12-2 major decision over Bears' junior Colin Harty (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South).

Sophomore Bobby Gasdia (Rockland, Mass.) and junior Stephen Heaslip (Dedham, Mass.) claimed victories for the Bears at 184 and 197 respectively. Gasdia downed USM freshman Nick Todorov (South Portland, Maine/Deering) 12-5, and Heaslip powered his way to an 11-4 win over USM junior Steven Corio (Manville, R.I./Lincoln) to put Bridgewater State out in front 24-19 with one bout remaining.

Wrestling in his first intercollegiate match, Risti took the offensive immediately scoring a takedown and a near fall just seconds into the bout before finally securing the necessary six points for victory with a pin over BSU senior Casey Enderlin (Pasco, Wash./Hanford).

Southern Maine returns to action next weekend at the East Stroudsburg University Open on Sunday, November 15. Weigh Ins begin at 7:00 a.m.

GORHAM, Maine – Twenty-four hours after securing the match-winning pin in the University of Southern Maine Huskies' season-opening dual meet, Husky freshman Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) has been named the inaugural Pilgrim Wrestling League Rookie of the Week for the 2015-2016 season.

Risti began his intercollegiate wrestling career with a bang earning a match-deciding victory in his first bout as a Husky. With his team trailing the Bridgewater State University Bears by five points, 24-19, the Huskies' heavyweight grappler overpowered his opponent, putting him to the mat in just 1:25 to claim the both the individual win and necessary points for a 25-24 Southern Maine team victory. Risti earned the win taking the offensive immediately scoring a takedown and a near fall just seconds into the bout, before earning his first collegiate pin over BSU senior Casey Enderlin.

Southern Maine returns to action next weekend at the East Stroudsburg University Open on Sunday, November 15. Weigh Ins begin at 7:00 a.m.

Southern Maine Finishes 10th at Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Led by the performances of junior CJ Luth (Milford, Conn.) and freshmen Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) and Brendan Weir (East Hampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team placed 10th out of 18 competing institutions at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted Saturday afternoon at Springfield College.

The 18-team field, which included Division I and Division II teams, was won by the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks with a team score of 162.0 points. Williams College placed second with a score of 139.0 points, while host Springfield College finished third with a score of 127.0 points.

Risti, who was named the Pilgrim Wrestling League Rookie of the Week two weeks ago, placed third wrestling at 285 pounds. Luth and Weir placed fourth at 157 and 141 pounds respectively.

Competing in his second event of the season, Weir posted a 5-2 record at the tournament opening with a 15-2 major decision win over STCC's Nicholas Arroyo. Weir then went on to earn a win by fall over John Hopkins' Sam Sands, putting his opponent to the mat in 6:08 to advance to his bracket's quarterfinals. Weir dropped a major decision bout to Springfield's David Colvin (10-2), before wrestling his way back into medal contention with a trio of wins in the consolation bracket, including a win by fall over Springfield's Patrick Ferzoco in 3:00 and a major decision victory over Marcus Iwama of Williams (12-2). In the third place match, Weir dropped a close 12-9 decision to Rhode Island College's Shawn Giblin to finish fourth.

Competing at 157 pounds, Luth rumbled his way into the semifinals with three overpowering wins. Luth earned back-to-back wins by technical fall defeating RIC's Aramand Vaziri 18-0 and then downing Coast Guard's Nicholas Jabs 16-0. In the quarterfinals, Luth defeated Stevens Institute's Leo Wortman by decision 6-5 before falling to SIT's Thomas Poklikuha by decision, 7-2, in the semifinals. In the third place match, Luth narrowly fell 2-1 with Coast Guard's Christopher Sullivan.

After losing in the quarterfinal round, Risti showed great resilience coming back to win four consecutive matches to earn his third place finish. In his second consolation round match, Risti won by sudden victory to stay alive, and then dominated his opponent Matt Ferraro of Trinity in the third place match taking him down 16-0.

Southern Maine will host its annual Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday, December 5 (10:00 a.m.) for its next contest.

Southern Maine Finishes Second at Ted Reese Invitational Championship

GORHAM, Maine – Led by four first place finishes the University of Southern Maine Huskies scored 93.5 points to finish second in a strong field of 11 teams at the 2015 Ted Reese Invitational Championship Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.

The tournament is named in honor of Ted Reese, the founder of the University of Southern Maine wrestling program – the only NCAA wrestling program in the State of Maine. Reese coached the Huskies' for six seasons. A pioneer of the sport in the State of Maine, Reese has helped develop wrestling programs at Camden-Rockport, Georges Valley and Bonny Eagle.

Freshmen Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) joined junior captains Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) and CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) atop the podiums in their respective weight classes.

Weir captured the 141-pound bracket defeating Lamont Wallace of Western New England by major decision 15-4. Weir had a tremendous day on the mat, three consecutive wins by fall to advance to the championship bout against Wallace. Weir opened the tournehy with a fall over Trinity's James Scalfani in 2:17, and then put MIT's Nina Manning to the mat in 1:00. In the semifinals, Weir downed Plymouth State's Kyle Fletcher in 3:00.

Del Gallo, one of the top wrestlers in the nation at 149-pounds, showed his dominance in the championship bout winning by technical fall over UMaine's John Clark 22-6. After receiving a bye in the first round, Del Gallo won back-to-back major decisions in the quarter final and semifinal rounds defeating Jack Reilly of Trinity 14-4 and Matthew Mawyb of RPI 18-5.

Returning All-Region wrestler, Luth cruised his way to a first-place spot at 157 pounds winning all three of his matches by technical fall. After a first round bye, Luth started his tournament with a dominating 17-1 win over Yuri Gulak of Western New England. In the semifinal, Luth powered his way to a 16-1 win over Trinity's Francis Corvino before downing Springfield Technical College's Josh Fontanez 17-1 to claim the top spot on the podium.

Risti continued his strong freshman season winning the 197-pound bracket. Risti earned a hard-fought 3-1 decision in the championship match, coming from behind 1-0 in the third period to score three unanswered points on an escape and a take down, to defeat American International College's Sheldon Rhoden. Risti opened the match with a pin against Trinity's Joseph Caggiano (2:43). In the semifinals, Risti took a 7-1 decision over Springfield Tech's Domenic Liquori.

Senior Aaron Weiss (East Machias, Maine/St. Paul's School) also earned a spot on the podium for Southern Maine placing second at 174 pounds. Weiss advanced to the championship but fell due to an medical forfeit. Weiss earned a win by fall, a decision and a major decision en route to the championship match.

Southern Maine returns to action at the United States Coast Guard Academy Tri-Meet on Friday (4:00 p.m.). The Huskies will take on Coast Guard and Roger Williams University

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), ranked sixth nationally by the NWCA at 149 pounds, picked up a pair of victories to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team in a pair of dual matches at the United States Coast Guard Academy Friday evening.
Facing fifth-ranked Roger Williams University, Southern Maine fell to the Hawks 45-9. In their second match of the day, USM dropped a 33-14 match to the USCGA Bears. With the pair of losses, Southern Maine is 1-2 in dual meet action. Roger Williams remains undefeated with a 6-0 record. Coast Guard's match against the Huskies was their first of the season and puts their record to 1-0.

Against the nationally-ranked Hawks, junior captain CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) picked up the lone Huskies' points with a hard-fought and high-scoring 15-13 win over RWU junior Ty Herzog (Slatington, Pa.). USM's other six points came on a forfeit at the 149 pounds credited Del Gallo.

In their match against the Bears, Southern Maine received points from freshmen Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic), and Del Gallo. Wrestling at 141, Weir earned USM's first points of the match with a 14-2 major decision victory against CGA freshman Adam Wilhem (Dayton, Ohio). Southern Maine Finishes Third at PSU Jim Aguiar Invitational

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) rumbled his way through the 141-pound bracket dominating his opponents taking three wins by fall and a win by technical fall to earn a spot atop the podium and earning Outstanding Wrestler honors to highlight a strong third place finish by the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team at the Jim Aguiar Invitational hosted Sunday by Plymouth State University.
Weir was one of three first place finishers for the Huskies and one of five place winners as Southern Maine scored 110 points to finish third out of nine teams. Southern Maine finished behind a pair of nationally-ranked teams at the tournament New York University and Williams. NYU ranked 24th in the latest D3 Coaches Poll won the tourney scoring 160.6 points, while Williams, ranked 16th, finished second with a score of 151.5 points. Plymouth State finished fourth scoring 103.0 points, while Bridgewater State rounded out the top five, totaling 72 points.

Joining Weir atop the podium of their respective weight classes were junior Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) and freshman Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic). Del Gallo, ranked sixth nationally at 149 pounds claimed his bracket, while Risti finished first in the 285-pound division.

Junior CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) and freshman Casey Abshire (Lowell, Mass.) placed second and third at 157 and 125 pounds respectively.

Weir opened the tourney pinning Scott Zimmerman of Plymouth State in 1:45, and then took a speedy win by fall over MIT's Nina Manning in 0:23 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinal round, Weir continued his domination earning a 20-3 technical fall over PSU's Zac Cassidy before downing American International College's Scott Coleman in the championship in 2:50.

Del Gallo cruised to the championship bout of the 149-pound bracket winning his first three matches by decision and major decision. In the championship, Del Gallo overpowered NYU's Ian Burke to take a 19-4 technical fall. Receiving a bye into the quarterfinals, Risti claimed his title at 285-pounds earning pin, and a pair of wins by decision. Risti, who pinned PSU's Alex Cesare in 3:50 to open the tourney, earned the title with a nail-biting 1-0 win over Bridgewater State's Tom Arsenault

Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (9:30 a.m.) at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals hosted by Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Coaches, Parents & Wrestlers,

The deadline for the Bay State Games is June 30th for the Scholastic Division (grade 8-11).

The Tournament will be held at UMass/Boston on Saturday, July 9th start at 8am.

Go to www.baystategames.org for more information and to register ASAP.


The Junior (grade 5-8) & Open Division (grade 12, college & open) will have onsite registration, but there will be a $10 late fee.
