Former UMaine goalie overcomes anxiety, alcohol abuse to hoist Stanley Cup

Scott Darling had hit rock bottom.

The former University of Maine goalie had just concluded the 2010-11 season playing for the Louisiana IceGators in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

The sixth-round draft choice of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2007 had posted a 6-22 record for a team that suffered through a 20-game losing streak.

Darling said the IceGators administration told him they didn’t want him back.

“You wake up one day and you realize just two years ago, you were one of the top prospects in the country. Now you don’t have anything you were supposed to have. You wonder why and you realize there is one huge factor holding you back from what you want to accomplish in life,” Darling said on Wednesday.

Former UMaine goaltender inks 4-year deal with Hurricanes

... After serving as Corey Crawford’s backup in Chicago the last two seasons, Scott Darling may finally have a chance to be the No. 1 goalie.

The 28-year-old Darling, a former University of Maine goaltender, has been signed to a 4-year, $4.15 million contract by the Carolina Hurricanes, the team announced.

The Hurricanes acquired the Lamont, Illinois, native from the Blackhawks on April 29 in exchange for a third-round draft pick from the Ottawa Senators.

For Scott Darling, every chance has been the biggest chance
The former UMaine goalie chose in 2011 to change his lifestyle, and the result has been dramatic.

... No one opportunity was more important than the next. There’s no other way to get from the lowest rung of the hockey ladder to the top as Darling has.

“For me, every one was the biggest one,” Darling said.

When you spend the first half of your career squandering opportunities like this, drinking them away until he was kicked out of UMaine, and washing out at the lowest level of professional hockey, the only way to put together a second act like this – Stanley Cup champion and now a starting NHL goalie – is to storm through every door that opens.
