Tom Brady's early arrival at Gillette

Think New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is excited to turn the page to the 2015 season?

If his 7 a.m. ET arrival for the opening of the team's offseason program Monday is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes. Brady's presence for the first day of voluntary workouts was expected, and foreshadowed Sunday (in point No. 10).

No word, however, if he was making a statement of sorts by wearing a shirt with the number five on it (insert chuckle).

A quick recap of the different stages of the voluntary offseason program:

Shane Vereen excited to visit White House with Patriots

Shane Vereen is excited to be starting offseason workouts this week with his new team, the New York Giants. But he may be just as excited to take Thursday off and go visit the White House with his old team, the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

"Yeah, very excited, very excited," Vereen said Monday on a conference call with Giants reporters. "It always has been something I've wanted to do, and now I can check it off my bucket list. I'm looking forward to meeting the president."

Media-based schedule for New England Patriots this week

Setting the stage for New England Patriots media coverage over the next three days:

Tuesday: Captains Devin McCourty and Matthew Slater are expected to answer questions from reporters at Gillette Stadium around 12 p.m. ET. This marks the second day of the team's voluntary offseason program, and the club posted some video of Day 1 on its website, while Andy Hart of Patriots Football Weekly spoke with coach Bill Belichick, who said, "One step along the way of a long journey. A good start in the offseason program leads to a good start in OTAs which leads to training camp, etc., etc., etc.” In addition, the NFL schedule will be announced at 8 p.m. ET.

Game-by-game predictions: New England Patriots

We made a mistake last year and won’t fall into the same trap in 2015. In making the annual “enjoy-these-now-and-laugh-at-me-later” game-by-game predictions, this writer projected the Patriots to struggle later in the season.

If we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that a Bill Belichick-coached team generally gets stronger at the end of the year. It’s the start of the year where there’s usually a hiccup that leads to alarms sounding across New England and some to aggressively question if Tom Brady has been surrounded by enough talent.

Which game might that be this year?

Follow along, as we’ll try to dig up some interesting nuggets to make this is a lighthearted, fun and hopefully informative exercise:

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo wasn't going anywhere

New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo was scheduled to earn $6.25 million in base salary this year and count $10.2 million against the salary cap. Coming off two injury-shortened seasons, the expectation was that the contract would be reduced at some point this offseason because the sides had a common goal of continuing their working relationship, and Mayo knew it was unlikely the team would keep him under the terms of the initial deal.

According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, that time is now.

Patriots restructure Jerod Mayo's contract

New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, a team captain who in each of the past two years has sustained season-ending injuries that have limited him to a total of 12 games, has restructured his contract, a source confirmed.

The restructure has been anticipated for some time due to his $6.25 million base salary and $10.2 million salary-cap charge for 2015. That likely would have been rich for the team to absorb given Mayo's injuries (torn pectoral muscle in 2013, torn patellar tendon in his knee in 2014).

Patriots host RB Todd Gurley on pre-draft visit

University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley, arguably the top-ranked player at his position in this year's draft, is in Foxborough for a visit Wednesday with the New England Patriots. The visit is one of the team's allotted 30 pre-draft visits that often include medical examinations, meetings with coaches and a tour of the team's facility.

CSNNE.com reported last week that Gurley was expected in for a visit at some point during this week. Wednesday marks the final day for teams to host players on pre-draft visits.

What we learned from Nick Caserio's pre-draft Patriots news conference

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio was at the dais for the team’s traditional pre-draft news conference Wednesday. This marked the fifth straight year Caserio has been front and center for the news conference, which used to feature head coach Bill Belichick.

Some of our top takeaways:

Roster has more numbers than the norm at this time. Caserio noted there are “not as many [roster] spots as there have been in the past.” The team currently has 75 players under contract, which leaves 15 spots that will mostly be filled by rookies (drafted or undrafted). “In years past, it’s been a little lower,” he said, also stressing that the draft is just one part of a year-long team-building process.
