Smart top defender in NBA's rookie survey

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart tied for first place in voting for best rookie defender in the league's annual Rookie Survey. Smart tied with Philadelphia's K.J. McDaniels while earning 13.5 percent of the vote among the 38 first-year players surveyed Sunday at the rookie photo shoot in Tarrytown, N.Y. ..

No. 44 for Zeller

Recently acquired center Tyler Zeller visited Boston last week and a recent update to the Celtics' online roster suggests he elected to wear No. 44 next season. Zeller wore No. 40 in Cleveland, and that's the same digit his brothers, Luke and Cody, have worn at the NBA level. Zeller appears to be returning to his more familiar collegiate number (his uncle, Al Eberhard, also wore No. 44 during four NBA seasons with Detroit). Jersey No. 44 was last worn by Chris Wilcox, but it has some lofty history in the likes of fan favorite Brian Scalabrine and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge.

Rapid Reaction: Love is a closed door Rapid Reaction: Love is a closed door

Rapid reaction with Yahoo! Sports reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed in principle to a deal that will deliver Kevin Love to Cleveland:

• WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE THE MEMORIES: For three days spanning into early June, Kevin Love sent Celtics fans into delirium with an unannounced visit to Boston. His trip featured well-publicized hobnobbing with some of Boston's top athletes, including a chance meeting with Rajon Rondo at Fenway Park. Celtics fans convinced themselves it was the start of a process that would deliver Love to Boston and reinvigorate a team that won 25 games last season. Alas, Minnesota never seemingly warmed to what Boston had to offer and Celtics fans were left clinging to a hope that no other tantalizing offer would emerge for Minnesota and maybe they'd have to consider Boston's package.

• LOTTERY LUCK AIDED CLEVELAND: ...

Fan Forecast: Cautiously optimistic

Our annual Boston Celtics Summer Forecast series tipped on Monday with our panel of local bloggers offering their thoughts on the team's final record for the 2014-15 season. We wanted to get our readers involved this year, so we distributed a link for you guys to complete the same summer survey as our "experts." We figured only a handful of diehards hankering for some summer hoops chatter would take the time to navigate the questions.

So consider us floored when more than 500 responses poured in over the first couple days. It became apparent that you guys deserved your own post to sound off on the future. And, hey, you'll probably make us "experts" look bad when we look back in a year's time...

Rapid Reaction: C's 2014-15 schedule

For the second straight summer, the NBA schedule-makers offered their opinion of the rebuilding Boston Celtics and it's not particularly flattering.

The Celtics are scheduled to play a measly one national TV game when ESPN broadcasts a visit from the Atlanta Hawks on Jan. 14. Boston does not have a single appearance among the 68 games scheduled to be spotlighted on TNT and ABC during the 2014-15 season. Last season, Boston had three scheduled ESPN games.

Here are the other games, dates and numbers that stand out from the release of the team's 2014-15 schedule:

The opener: For the first time since...

Fan Forecast: Bogans begone?

The Boston Celtics are overstocked with bodies at the moment and will need to trim down for the start of the season. As part of our Summer Forecast series, we asked which Celtics player is most likely to not make the opening-day roster.

For the sake of this exercise, both our expert panel and responding readers were asked to ignore Chris Johnson and Chris Babb -- two younger, nonguaranteed players who face uphill battles to stick on the roster. Voting options included (1) Keith Bogans; (2) Brandon Bass; (3) Jeff Green; (4) Joel Anthony

Frazier to camp with C's?

It appears undrafted Penn State point guard Tim Frazier will attend training camp with the Boston Celtics.

The college's men's basketball Twitter account sent the following Tweet on Monday: The 6-foot-1 Frazier averaged 14.9 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game during his senior season at Penn State. The Celtics' roster is already overstocked with bodies, so those attending camp often attend knowing they are more likely auditioning for spots with the team's D-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Frazier will add another point guard to the camp roster, which could help spell the likes of Rajon Rondo and Phil Pressey, while also allowing Marcus Smart to spend more time off the ball in practice situation...

National treasure for Smart, Olynyk

Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca has deep Duke University roots, so a text from coach Mike Krzyzewski isn't particularly noteworthy on its own. But Pagliuca's phone buzzed earlier this month with a message from Coach K that made him smile. "Coach K actually sent me a text that said [Celtics rookie guard] Marcus [Smart] was a fantastic player [with] the USA [select team] in Las Vegas," said Pagliuca. "That’s great that Coach K mentioned what a great player he is." ...

A few odds and ends around the Boston Celtics as we trudge towards the start of training camp later this month:

• Moser signs in Lithuania: Mike Moser, an undrafted rookie who raised eyebrows with solid play for the Celtics summer league team in Orlando, has reportedly signed to play overseas in Lithuania. Moser was exploring NBA camp invites, but Boston didn't offer a particularly enticing chance to stick on a regular-season roster. The Celtics are already at max capacity of 20 players -- this without even officially signing Evan Turner yet -- and need to trim to 15 before the start of the regular season. The players invited to camp for the Celtics are likely ticketed for the Maine Red Claws of the D-League. Playing overseas offers a more lucrative option for Moser.
