Cony volleyball squad benefits from travel league experience
Sarah Caron, Lauren Coniff played on Portland-area travel team last winter.

...But if you broke out a map of schools with high school volleyball programs in Maine, Cony may as well be right next to Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole. Most of all Class A and Class B programs reside in the southern half of the state, particularly in York and Cumberland counties.

Knowing this, Cony players Sarah Caron and Lauren Coniff decided to do something about it. In an effort to improve their own skills and bring back tips they learned to their teammates, Caron and Coniff played for a Portland-area travel team for the last two winters. The duo played teams from all over New England, teaming with players from some of the best volleyball programs in the state.

“We’ve done it the past two winters,” Caron said. “On Sundays, we would travel down to Biddeford to practice. Throughout the winter, we would have different tournaments where we would travel. Sometimes we were in (Massachusetts), New Hampshire, around Maine.”

New volleyball coach sets up for season

...“It’s a good time to be taking over,” Grant said. “Varsity volleyball is getting bigger in Maine, and it’s a perfect time to get into it and help the players and the program reach the next level.”

Grant is a Harrington native and works at The Jackson Laboratory. He played soccer at Narraguagus High School. It wasn’t until his time at the University of Maine at Machias in the late 1990s that he picked up volleyball, but once he did, he never looked back.

“I actually just played pickup, but it took off from there,” Grant said. “One of my best friends from college was a starting center on the women’s team, and I started playing with some of them. I’ve been playing ever since.”

Fosters Capsule Volleyball Previews

MARSHWOOD
Outlook: The Hawks graduated seven starters from their inaugural MPA Class A season, which included a trip to the playoffs. ... “We are looking to build upon the progress we’ve made from our first year,” said Brisson. “But we are going into the season with a relatively inexperienced, junior-heavy team.” Marshwood has one senior and 10 juniors. It opens at Thornton Academy tonight. The Hawks host neighboring rival York of Class B on Thursday.

YORK
Outlook: The Wildcats opened their second season as a varsity program on Friday, falling to Yarmouth, 3-0. Bradley says there is a “big discrepancy” between the top four schools in Class B — Greely, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Yarmouth — and everyone else. “Our goal is to win the matches we are expected to win and play hard and compete against the teams that have had programs a lot longer than we have,” Bradley said. ... Seven of York’s 15 varsity players are now playing club volleyball. “It really helps grow the program when you have girls with that commitment; that’s going to help us a lot this year,” Bradley said. ... The Wildcats have their first two home matches of the season this week, starting with Wells tonight.

PPH Volleyball preview: Coaches fear reclassification dilutes competition
Three of Maine's top programs are moving down to Class B as the growing sport expands to three divisions.

...The Maine Principals’ Association expanded volleyball from two to three classes this fall, in reaction to the sport growing from 25 to 35 varsity teams over the past two seasons. Greely, because of its enrollment, has dropped to Class B.

Last year there were 22 teams in Class A and 13 in Class B. This year there are 13 teams in Class A, 12 in Class B and 11 in the new Class C, which is mostly Downeast Maine schools.

Hasch said two classes would benefit the sport because newer programs improve faster by playing established ones.

“If you don’t play tough teams, you don’t get better,” Hasch said.

PPH Volleyball preview: Players to watch
Our list of the top 10 players in southern Maine includes two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors.

Kaitlyn Bennett, Yarmouth freshman, outside hitter: A force at the club level, the freshman is solid in all six rotations. Her coach says she plays like a senior. Bennett’s passing skills from the back are excellent, and she’s likely to lead the team in kills.

Megan Connelly, Cape Elizabeth junior, outside hitter:

PPH Volleyball preview: Teams to watch
Falmouth and Greely, both of whom move down to Class B this year, top our list.

1. Falmouth: In their first match, the Yachtsmen beat defending Class A state champion Greely, 3-1, with standout freshman Annika Hester leading with 10 kills and 15 digs. Many coaches expect Falmouth to make its way back to the state title match, where it played in 2013 and 2014, winning Class A in ’13. It plays in Class B now.
