Yarmouth sweeps Windham, sets up return trip to Biddeford

YARMOUTH—Tuesday evening, Yarmouth’s volleyball team dropped a tough five-set decision in the regular season finale at Biddeford.

Saturday, the Clippers will have an opportunity to avenge it.

Thanks to a strong performance in Thursday’s playoff opener.

Yarmouth, the No. 6 seed in Class A, hosted No. 11 Windham in a Class A preliminary round contest and while the Clippers were pushed, they had all the answers.

Gorham shuts out Cheverus, 3-0
The Rams win their Class A prelim and advance to the quarterfinals against top-seeded Greely.

... “We hadn’t seen them in the regular season so we’ve just been focusing on doing what we do best,” Rizzo said. “That’s being aggressive at the net.”

Diana Kolb led Gorham with 15 kills; Kristen Curley added 13. Maiya Carlson notched seven aces for the Rams.

“We had great passing and we were really smooth in the back row,” Kolb said. “That made it really easy for our setter, Isabelle (Kolb). She set us up to be able to get those kills – it was definitely the best she has set all year.”

The Stags hosted a playoff game for the first time in the program’s six-year history.

Bonny Eagle advances with five-set win
The Scots slip past Deering in the preliminary round for their first postseason victory.

... “Going to Yarmouth last year (losing 3-0) taught us a lesson – to not be nervous and to think straight (this year),” said Bonny Eagle Coach Kelley Champagne. “We made sure to be mentally strong no matter what happens.”

The Scots (11-4) will be at second-seeded Scarborough (13-1) in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In the fifth set, Bonny Eagle’s defense started to match its serving talent. Jenna Litif had two blocks – for 4-1 and 9-1 leads – to complement Whitney Regan’s three service points and Samantha Morash’s seven straight points that turned a 5-1 lead to 12-1. A Hannah Corbett spike on match point put the it away.

Shorthanded Yarmouth digs deep, upsets Biddeford

BIDDEFORD—Yarmouth’s volleyball team has won three Class B state titles, as well as a lot of other dramatic matches over the years, but it isn’t a stretch to call what the Clippers accomplished Saturday morning perhaps their finest hour.

Playing without senior standout Rachel Chillé, who suffered a concussion in Thursday’s match, Yarmouth, the No. 6 seed in Class A, was a decided underdog when it traveled to No. 3 Biddeford for a quarterfinal round match.

The Clippers, who dropped a five-set thriller Tuesday at Biddeford, gained early confidence, winning the first set, 25-19, behind pinpoint passing from sophomore Dominique Moran, eight kills from senior hitter extraordinaire Alison Clark and timely serving from senior Andrea St. Pierre.

... “Both of those kids (haven’t) seen a lot of playing time all year,” Yarmouth Coach Jim Senecal said. “This match, they had to.”

Robichaud passed and served well and Bennett did her best with Biddeford’s tips and short game, allowing Yarmouth to extend rallies and eventually find Clark for a booming spike, or occasionally and with great effect, sophomore middle hitter Ceanne Lyon. Normally relied upon for her blocking abilities, Lyon scored four critical points in the fourth set on softer spikes that caromed off the hands of Biddeford blockers.

“It’s the (slightly unorthodox) nature of her attack that really gets their block off balance,” Senecal said of Lyon, who is playing volleyball for the first time this season. “She’s not a powerful hitter.”

Top-ranked Greely tops Gorham
The Rangers lose a set for the first time this year, but still roll into the semifinals with a 15-0 record.

... “Gorham is a very good team and we knew that coming in,” Molly Chapin of Greely said. “Very big blocks. We had to work on hitting around them.

“They picked up a lot of balls. They were very scrappy.”

Gorham was losing but Coach Nicole Rizzo was applauding.

“I’m so happy with our level of play,” she said. “We were able to get passes and set our offense.”

Still, Greely outplayed the Rams in those first games, with setter Morgan Selby finding her powerful hitters in Chapin, Kayley Cimino and Sara Agren.

NYA advances to semifinals
North Yarmouth Academy earns a four-set victory over Wells to reach the Class B semifinals for the first time.

... Leading the way at the net were senior Zelda Clegg (five aces, seven kills, five blocks, five digs) and sophomore Sydney Plummer (three blocks). The duo wreaked havoc on potential kill attempts despite a height disadvantage to their counterparts across the net.

“They were both great on the net,” said Krainis. “We’ve been working on it all week – explosive jumping, going up with both hands and reading the other team to make sure our timing was right.”

Senior Suzanna Butterfield (16-for-20 serving, six aces, eight kills), who served for seven straight points in a furious comeback attempt in the third set and twice served for four straight points during the final set, helped pace an efficient service line attack for NYA.
