Cross country: Laverdiere easily wins Class B title
Luke Laverdiere runs 15:43.89, while Falmouth, Lincoln and Orono win the team championships.

...“He’s in a class all by himself,” Yarmouth Coach John Rogers said of Laverdiere. “It’ll be interesting to see what he does at New Englands.”

Runners with the top 25 times, regardless of class, qualified for the New England Meet next month in Belfast. Also qualifying were the three team champions – Falmouth in A, Lincoln Academy in B and Orono in C – as well as three at-large teams, all from Class A: Scarborough, Greely and Deering.

Only in Class A was the team competition particularly close. Scarborough, a distant fourth at the South meet last weekend, surprised many with a second-place showing, 95 points to Falmouth’s 73. Greely was third at 105.

Cross country: Matson wins Class A girls’ title
Falmouth freshman Sophie Matson easily wins, while Camden Hills, Yarmouth and Orono win team titles

...“No,” Stockman said with a laugh. “We were like, ‘She’s going to win. Let’s stick with the chase pack.’ ”

Wise choice. Matson blew away the field in seemingly effortless fashion, covering the hilly 5-kilometer course at Twin Brook Recreation Area in 18 minutes, 41.60 seconds to win the individual title. Stockman and Iltis moved up from fifth and sixth positions to take second and third more than half a minute behind Matson and lead the Windjammers to a decisive team victory with 73 points to runner-up Greely’s 107.

Stockman remembers seeing a glimpse of Matson on the course, at a turn in the woods.

“There she goes, floating away,” Stockman said. “She’s very graceful. And she’s only a freshman. She’s got a lot more state titles in her.”

Unbeaten Windjammer girls run to state Class A championship
Camden Hills too fast, deep for all in-state distance opponents this fall

CUMBERLAND — The Camden Hills Regional High Schools girls cross-country team literally and figuratively raced to the coveted state Class A championship on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 28 to cap an unbeaten campaign.

The Windjammers ran to their first state crown — led by second- and third-place individual finishes from junior Augusta Stockman and sophomore Grace Iltis — in the season's final meet, before the New Englands, at the Twin Brook Recreation Area.

Photos, video and additional information from this event will appear later with this story.

The Windjammers finished 24-0 during regular season and came close to recording a perfect score of 15 — a team's five scoring runners finish in the first through fifth positions in a race — a handful of times.

Falmouth boys, Yarmouth girls bring home cross country state titles

Forecaster Country was again the epicenter of the high school cross country world Saturday.

Not only was Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland the host site, but two local teams, the Falmouth boys and Yarmouth girls, won state titles and three individuals were tops in their class.

For many area standouts, the season isn’t over, as they’ll get to run one final time at the New England championships.

Here’s a recap of all of Saturday’s action:
