- Waterville cross country teams showing promise
The Purple Panthers take advantage of their depth.
Three runners finished in the top 25 during the meet at Maranacook on Sept. 1. Another three runners finished in the top 25 in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference meet Saturday. Gwinna Remillard has been the early standout for the Purple Panthers. She finished third at the Maranacook meet (22:45.90) and fourth Saturday, but improved her time, finishing at 22:31.00.

Cross country notebook 9/25:
- Cony, despite flue and injuries, off to solid start
Several runners leading both boys, girls teams

...Strangely enough for the Rams, their biggest opponent hasn’t been another team, or another runner. It’s the flu.

“Unfortunately for us, we are currently going through a nasty cold or flu spreading and have had some nagging shin splint and hip flexor issues that have plagued some of our kids,” Cony head coach Shawn Totman said via email. “We are continuing to fight through all this but it is still a big concern. This would be a terrible time of the season to be sidelined for a prolonged period of time with a lot of races coming up.”

Despite sickness and injuries, the Rams are still stepping up when it counts. Cony had a good showing in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference meet at its home course in Augusta last Friday. For the girls, freshman Tessa Jorgensen finished second with a time of 22:44.33, while her sister — senior Tara Jorgensen — finished eighth with a time of 23:17.52. Zina Gregor rounded out the squad’s top 20 finishers, placing 19th with a time of 24:49.08.
