Bruins playing it safe with Chara

BRIGHTON, Mass – It’s not your imagination if you feel like you haven’t seen 6-foot-9 Zdeno Chara much this preseason.

After all, it’s awfully difficult to miss the massive D-man out on the ice, and some of the Bruins' sloppy D-zone mistakes in Detroit and Philly probably wouldn’t have happened if Ol' No. 33 was out there.

With Pastrnak, DeBrusk Bruins Might’ve Finally Found Right Linemates For Krejci

The days of the Bruins bookending center David Krejci with more than 400 pounds of muscle in the person of Milan Lucic, Nathan Horton or Jarome Iginla are long over.

The NHL is different and the Bruins are attempting to adjust to the increase of speed with the insertion of younger, faster players. That transformation includes the type of wings Krejci needs to succeed.

From the first day of training camp – in the same way Krejci played with Lucic and Horton from the first day of camp in 2010 – 6-foot, 183-pound rookie Jake DeBrusk and lightning fast David Pastrnak have been Krejci’s wings. It appears those three will line up against the Nashville Predators in the season opener on Thursday at TD Garden.

Take a look at the Bruins’ opening night roster

The Bruins lost goalie Malcolm Subban to the Vegas Golden Knights, put Torey Krug and Austin Czarnik on IR, and sent Rob O’Gara to Providence.

Those moves got the Bruins down to 23 players, the requirement for opening night.

Barring some weird happenings, here are the Bruins who will take part in the opening night festivities:

Acciari out six weeks

On Thursday, the Bruins started the season without the likes of Patrice Bergeron (lower body), Torey Krug (jaw), Austin Czarnik (illness) and David Backes (out at least 3-4 weeks with diverticulitis).

Thanks to the impressive regular season debuts from Charlie McAvoy, Jake DeBrusk and Anders Bjork, the Bruins – who also lost Noel Acciari in the season opener to a finger injury (more on that in a bit) – and their up-tempo style of play got the best of the defending Western Conference champion Nashville Predators at TD Garden, 4-3.

To say that the injured guys aren’t eager to return and add to the speed and skill of the Bruins lineup is an understatement.
