BOSTON -- The Bruins were due for an embarrassing no-show against a bad team after playing some pretty good hockey over the last two weeks, and it arrived on cue versus -- once again -- the New York Islanders.

A dreadful second period by Boston allowed the Isles to coast to a 4-0 win at TD Garden Monday afternoon, giving the Metro Division's worst team its second regulation victory over the Bruins in two months. If the B's miss the playoffs by four points or less, they can look at both defeats as big reasons why they didn’t end up making the cut.

Talking Points: 'Disappointing' showing by Bruins in 4-0 loss to Islanders
After a scoreless first period, the Islanders broke down the B’s defense for the game's first goal. The Adam McQuaid/Torey Krug pairing was caught behind the net and David Krejci was late covering the slot as Casey Cizikas set up Nikolay Kulemin for the first of his two goals on the afternoon.

BRUINS CANCEL PRACTICE TO 'REGROUP' AFTER BAD LOSS TO ISLANDERS

BRIGHTON, Mass – The Bruins were supposed to hit the ice for the eighth day in a row on Tuesday following their empty 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Monday afternoon, but those plans were scrubbed.

The reeling Black and Gold instead cancelled practice, with only Matt Beleskey, Jimmy Hayes and Zane McIntyre taking the ice at Warrior Ice Arena and the rest of the B’s hitting the giant reset button after an embarrassing loss.

“I think it’s one of those [things] where you’ve got to regroup and recharge the batteries, and feel better,” said Patrice Bergeron. “Maybe a little bit of fatigue was part of it [Monday vs. the Isles] and you use a day like today to look forward, look at videos and be better the next day. It happens today and we have another game tomorrow [against Detroit].”

Bruins blow early 3-goal lead, lose to Red Wings 6-5 in shootout

DETROIT (AP) — Thomas Vanek and the Detroit Red Wings have been perfect in shootouts this season.

Vanek and Frans Nielsen scored in a shootout, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a comeback 6-5 win over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night.

In 1-on-1 duels after regulation and overtime, Vanek has scored on all four of his shots and Detroit is an NHL-best 6-0.

The Red Wings rallied from a pair of three-goal deficits in the first period, and with 3:04 remaining in regulation, Gustav Nyquist scored to pull them into a tie.

BRUINS MOTTO: DON'T JUST DO SOMETHING, STAND THERE!

After back-to-back, soul-crushing losses earlier this week, the Bruins responded by doing pretty much what they've done over the last couple of seasons:

Nothing.

Claude Julien was not relieved of his duties -- as many expected after the Bruins blew a couple of three-goal leads in a shootout loss in Detroit on Wednesday night -- and there was no big shakeup for a reeling hockey club that certainly feels like it needs it.

Darling, Blackhawks blank Bruins

BOSTON (AP) — Blackhawks backup Scott Darling insists he isn’t trying to take playing time away from No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford.

‘‘I don’t know if you guys know who my goalie partner is,’’ Darling said with a smile after beating the Boston Bruins 1-0 on Friday night. ‘‘He’s one of the best goalies in the world, hands down, no arguments. So I’m just pretty happy to get any games I can.’’

Things go from bad to worse for Bruins with loss to Penguins

PITTSBURGH — There doesn't appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel for the Bruins right now.

After hanging with the Chicago Blackhawks for 58-plus minutes on Friday, the B's were doing the same with the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins today and appeared poised for a comeback at the start of the third period.

Instead, the Penguins showed why they're the class of the league, dropping three goals on the B's in less than five minutes to start the third period to win going away, 5-1, at PPG Paints Arena.

David Pastrnak scores late in OT, Bruins beat Red Wings 4-3

BOSTON (AP) — David Pastrnak’s long-awaited 20th goal of the season came at an opportune moment for the struggling Boston Bruins.

Pastrnak scored with 46.9 seconds left in overtime to lift the Bruins to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night, ending Boston’s four-game losing streak.

‘‘It’s very nice to get the one — especially with the win,’’ said Pastrnak, who hadn’t scored since getting his 19th on Dec. 14 against Pittsburgh.

After avoiding suspension, Marchand lifts Bruins past Pens

BOSTON (AP) -- Brad Marchand got fined, but avoided a suspension - and led the Boston Bruins to a victory.

Marchand scored two second-period goals in a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night, hours after he was docked $10,000 by the NHL but not ordered to sit out any games for what the league termed was ''a dangerous trip'' of Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall on Jan. 24.

''He skated like he was $10,000 lighter,'' teammate David Backes said with a laugh. ''He was flying around and doing what he does best playing the game and playing hard.''

Chara nets go-ahead goal in 3rd, Bruins beat Lightning 4-3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning are heading in different directions in the Atlantic Division.

Zdeno Chara scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, Tuukka Rask made 18 saves and the Bruins beat the Lightning 4-3 on Tuesday night for their first three-game winning streak since early December.

The Bruins are third in the division, while the struggling Lightning are mired in sixth after reaching the Stanley Cup final (2015) and Eastern Conference final (2016) in the previous two seasons.

Bruins beat Sharks 6-3 in Bruce Cassidy’s coaching debut

BOSTON (AP) — David Pastrnak made sure Bruce Cassidy’s Boston coaching career got off to a winning start.

Pastrnak scored a pair of power-play goals to help the Bruins beat the San Jose Sharks 6-3 in Cassidy’s first game behind the bench Thursday night.

‘‘We came a little more energized and we wanted to get the win for Butch,’’ Pastrnak said.
