Pirates done: Hershey moves on

The season has come to an end for the Portland Pirates.
Ryan Stanton scored the game-winning goal for the Hershey Bears Sunday as they earned a 2-1 victory over the Pirates in Game 5 of the Atlantic Division semifinal before 6,329 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The Bears take the best-of-five series, 3-2, and will now move on to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the second round of the American Hockey League Calder Cup playoffs, starting Wednesday in Hershey.

Portland Pirates hockey franchise leaving Portland

Blindsided.

That’s how Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling felt late Wednesday afternoon when he first learned that the American Hockey League’s Portland Pirates are severing ties with the city and relocating to Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Pirates are the top minor league affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers.

A story on Masslive.com reported that a group of local investors in Springfield signed a letter of intent to purchase the Pirates.

Former Pirates owner, player lining up new hockey team for Portland

One of the men who originally brought the Pirates minor league hockey team to Portland is behind a plan to bring the sport back to Maine’s largest city, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday morning.

Godfrey Wood, a Falmouth resident and longtime head of the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, told The Forecaster he’s partnering with Pirates Hall of Famer and Chief Operating Officer Brad Church to bring an ECHL hockey team to Portland for the 2017-2018 season.
