Pirates return to Maine for training camp
Portland will play an exhibition game at home Saturday.

The players who will make up the 2014-15 Portland Pirates are scheduled to gather in Maine for the first time Monday.

Medical exams, a team meeting and a team dinner are all planned for Monday at the MHG Ice Centre in Saco, with on-ice practice to be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday this week.

The Pirates return to the former Cumberland County Civic Center – now the Cross Insurance Arena – Saturday for the first time since 2013 for an exhibition game with American Hockey League rival Manchester at 7 p.m.

Portland and Manchester will scrimmage again Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Ice Arena on the campus of St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

All practices are free and open to the public. Tickets for the exhibition game Saturday will be general admission and available that day at the arena.

Following another week of practice in Saco, the Pirates will open the regular season against the Providence Bruins on Oct. 11 at the CIA.

Pirates distancing themselves from a sham of a season
Purely the Portland Pirates again, the team opens training camp and is aiming to regain its fan base

SACO — The call came from Coach Ray Edwards near center ice after a defender poked loose a puck to disrupt the progress of three forwards. The attackers hesitated, unsure whether to continue the drill. “Regroup!” Edwards hollered. “Regroup!” It seemed a fitting battle cry for the first day of training camp for Maine’s American Hockey League franchise. The Portland Pirates are regrouping after their most frustrating season since leaving their Skipjacks uniforms in Baltimore and heading north in 1993...

Portland Pirates: Team opens training camp with renewed optimism

SACO — Tuesday morning's practice, held at the team's training facility at the MHG Ice Centre and the first of training camp, was familiar to many of the Portland Pirates. The team is hoping it's one of the only similarities they find to last season. After finishing the year i...

Portland Pirates: Lewiston native Mark Anthoine giving tryout his best shot

SACO — Mark Anthoine pushed through the double doors from the locker room area at the MHG Ice Centre on Tuesday clutching an energy drink and breathing heavily. Out of his hockey uniform but still drenched in sweat, he greeted everyone holding a camera or a microphone with a smile. A...

Portland Pirates: Young veterans look to increase impact

"We only have, I think, four rookies under contract," Pirates head coach and general manager Ray Edwards said. "A lot of our guys are second- and third-year guys. The development will continue, but those guys need to get results in playing the role that they're in, whether it's a goaltender winning games, or better numbers or whatever else. Hopefully that equates to winning more games." Currently, eight non-roster Arizona Coyotes players are listed as restricted free agents following the coming season. Another six are unrestricted. Two more currently with the NHL club — Brandon Gormley and Brandon McMillan — skated primarily with Portland a year ago, and they, too, are RFAs after the 2014-15 season...

Players, fans pleased by Pirates’ return
The team takes to the Portland ice for the first time in 17 months with an exhibition victory.

At precisely 6:24 p.m. Saturday, Mike McKenna strode through an open door and dug his goalie skates into the ice of the recently renamed Cross Insurance Arena. After an absence of 17 months and two days, professional hockey finally returned to downtown Portland. “It’s amazing to see what they’ve done with the building,” said McKenna, a little more than three hours later, after helping the Portland Pirates to a 5-2 exhibition victory over the Manchester Monarchs before a crowd of 695. “I really can’t say thanks enough to our ownership with what they’ve done to our locker room and stuff. It’s really impressive and well appreciated.”McKenna played for the Pirates seven seasons ago, when the rink was called the Cumberland County Civic Center. Since then he’s played for three NHL teams and spent most of last season with American Hockey League rival Springfield...

Portland Pirates: Homecoming for goalie McKenna

He's either a foodie who can skate, or a hockey player who loves to eat. Either way, Mike McKenna is getting the best of both worlds in his return to the Portland Pirates this season. McKenna, a journeyman goaltender who has played for 13 teams across the National Hockey League, Ame...

Pirates’ 20-year-old prospect has a name to remember
Henrik Samuelsson, ready for his first AHL season, has talent and fire – like his dad, the former NHL player, Ulf Samuelsson.

SACO — For the first power play of the first exhibition game last weekend, Portland Pirates Coach Ray Edwards sent out his youngest forward, 20-year-old Henrik Samuelsson. After an extended period of sharp passing and crisp puck movement, Samuelsson rewarded Edwards’ faith by tipping in a Brendan Shinnimin shot from the point to give the Pirates a two-goal cushion in a victory against the Manchester Monarchs. “His skill level is such that you have to get him out there on the power play,” Edwards said of Samuelsson, who will make his American Hockey League debut Saturday night when Portland opens its regular season against Providence at the Cross Insurance Arena...

Portland Pirates: Optimism on eve of regular season

"There's a renewed excitement and we all want to rewrite the script from last year," Portland general manager and head coach Ray Edwards said. "The guys have pride; the coaches have pride. We want to get back at it and prove we're a good hockey team. This is a team that can do good things, and we want people to be proud of us." Even the team's die-hard fans had a tough time sticking it out last season. Skating at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston because of construction and a lease dispute with their home rink in Portland, attendance waned in the second half of the campaign. For many of the players, the commute to a home game was more than an hour each way, and by the end of the season, crowds at the Lewiston rink struggled to hit 1,000 people..
