Former Pirates coach Trotz returning for reunion
The new coach of the Washington Capitals led the Portland Pirates to the 1993-94 AHL championship.

BY MIKE LOWE ..Barry Trotz has a pretty good life. And this weekend he’s going to get a chance to revisit one of his favorite years. Trotz, the coach of the Washington Capitals, will be among those returning to Maine this weekend to celebrate a reunion of the Portland Pirates’ 1993-94 Calder Cup team. In 1994, the Portland Pirates delighted fans during a time when there was so little to cheer.

BY STEVE SOLLOWAY ..Olaf Kolzig flipped his goalie’s mask in one direction and tossed his goalie’s stick in another. For one second, maybe two, his big smile of pure joy was visible as he skated a stride or two away from the net. Then he was buried in the swarm of Portland Pirates teammates that night in 1994. The Pirates had beaten the Moncton Hawks to win the Calder Cup in six games...
