Gardiner boys lacrosse ousts Oak Hill in Class B North semifinals
Hebert, Poirier and Berthiaume each have hat tricks in Gardiner's win.

...The Tigers (14-0) moved the ball and themselves better Friday than they had against Winslow, but their performance was a little uneven.

“A little bit better,” said Gardiner senior Tristan Hebert, who scored a hat trick to run his season total to 42 goals. “We moved the ball more on offense and we put up more goals than we did the other day. This team was better than the team we played (Wednesday).”

Oak Hill, seeded fifth, finishes its season at 8-6 with a quarterfinal win against No. 4 Cony to its credit.

“We’ve come a long way,” Oak Hill coach Joe Hinkley said. “We’re young but we’re going to get there.”

Gardiner prepares for regional finals
Eagles seek return trip to state title game; Tigers hope to snap slide to Clippers.

...“They’re Yarmouth. They’re still as good as they’ve always been. They’re a fundamentally sound team and battle-tested because of the conference they play in,” Gardiner coach K.C. Johnson said, adding that he’s scouted Yarmouth three times.

After dropping the final two games of the regular season, Yarmouth rolled through the first two rounds of the playoffs, outscoring opponents Erskine and Maranacook/Winthrop by a combined score of 28-3.

Cape Elizabeth holds off furious Falmouth rally to win memorable regional final

CAPE ELIZABETH—It came down to the final second.

Of course it did.

The Game of the Year, Act III, proved to be everything it was billed to be Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field when the state’s two best boys’ lacrosse teams squared off for the right to play in Saturday’s Class B state final.

The host Capers of Cape Elizabeth, one year removed from a stunning home loss in the regional final, got another shot at defending Class B champion Falmouth and while they never trailed, the Capers couldn’t secure the victory until the final horn sounded.

Cape Elizabeth holds on, dethrones Falmouth
The Capers survive a late comeback and capture the Class B South title with a 6-5 win.

...For the ninth straight time, the two powers met in the regional final Wednesday night. In front of roughly 1,000 fans, the Capers secured a 6-5 win when Nick Farnham of Falmouth fired a man-up shot just inches wide of the goal as the clock expired.

“I saw the shot but boy, it was fast,” said Cape goalie Sam Price, who made 11 saves. “It took me a long time to process that we had won, probably until I was at the bottom of the (victory) pile.”

It’s possible the rivals will meet again in a regional final in 2018, but it won’t be in Class B. With the sport expanding to three classes for the first time, Falmouth will move up to Class A. Cape is expected to petition to also join Class A.

Yarmouth extends reign in Class B North
The sixth-seeded Clippers earn their ninth consecutive regional title with a 13-2 win over previously unbeaten Gardiner.

...That the Clippers lost six regular-season games is no surprise. They fell to Class A finalists Scarborough and Brunswick, and twice each to Class B South powers Falmouth and Cape Elizabeth, arguably the four best teams in the state.

“We’ve played the most difficult schedule of any team in the state of Maine,” Yarmouth Coach David Pearl said. “The tempo and the pace that our younger players are playing at, I think it’s paid off in their development. This whole team has really skyrocketed.”

The Clippers built a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, getting two goals from Silas Chapelli, and one each from Remi LeBlanc, Cooper May, Anders Corey and Henry Venden. Chapelli finished with three goals and Venden scored four.
