Cape Elizabeth takes on familiar rival Yarmouth in Class B.

...“We’re going to beat them,” said Yarmouth Coach David Pearl. “There’s nothing like an upset. I truly believe our guys think we can beat Cape. We’ve got a plan, we just need to execute it.”

Yarmouth has good scorers in Remi LeBlanc (32 goals) and Bill Jacobs (23 goals, 20 assists) but does not have Cape’s firepower. The Capers’ defense, led by Ben Ekedahl (69 ground balls, 40 caused turnovers) and goalie Sam Price (.700 save percentage, 80 percent successful on clears) has shown it can shut down top scorers and also create turnovers and start transition offense.

That means more opportunities for attackmen Owen Thoreck (43 goals, 22 assists) and Tate Perkins (33 goals, 18 assists) and midfielders Finn Raymond (31 goals, 17 assists) and Connor Thoreck (25 goals, 12 assists).

Cape Elizabeth holds off furious Falmouth rally to win memorable regional final

CAPE ELIZABETH—It came down to the final second.

Of course it did.

The Game of the Year, Act III, proved to be everything it was billed to be Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field when the state’s two best boys’ lacrosse teams squared off for the right to play in Saturday’s Class B state final.

The host Capers of Cape Elizabeth, one year removed from a stunning home loss in the regional final, got another shot at defending Class B champion Falmouth and while they never trailed, the Capers couldn’t secure the victory until the final horn sounded.

Cape Elizabeth holds off Yarmouth

...Yarmouth whittled down Cape Elizabeth’s big lead to 8-5 by the end of the third quarter. Then, Finnegan Raymond waded through a mass of defenders to score 95 seconds into the fourth and put the Capers up, 9-5.

“He had a great fourth quarter, he’s had a great season,” Cape Elizabeth coach Ben Raymond said.

Less than a minute later, Remi LeBlanc set up Henry Venden to bring the Clippers back within three goals. Raymond again put the Capers up by four, looping around the net for a goal that made it 10-6 with 8:22 remaining in the game.

Cape boys pull away to beat Yarmouth, earn another coveted coronation

The state’s most storied boys’ lacrosse program returned to the pinnacle Saturday afternoon, but their opponent, one which possesses no shortage of pride itself, certainly didn’t make it easy.

Cape Elizabeth’s regional final victory over Falmouth Wednesday was viewed by many as the de facto state championship, but the Yarmouth Clippers had other ideas and at one point in the third period, only trailed the heavily favored Capers by three goals, but Cape Elizabeth, which shot to an early 5-0 lead, saved its best for last and pulled away to prevail, 16-7.

“We reminded the guys how important it was,” said longtime Capers coach Ben Raymond. “Falmouth wasn’t the last game. We wanted to win the last game, especially for our seniors. They did a great job making sure everyone stayed focused. They went out the right way.”
