Brunswick too much for Blue Devils

...Trailing 14-5, with the game all but over with six minutes remaining, Lewiston kept up its efforts, scoring three unanswered goals, including a pair from Rivet to cut it to 14-8, but it was too late for a complete comeback. Brunswick closed out the game to remain unbeaten into the season's final game.

"That's our goal every year, make it to the last game. Obviously this year it is a little extra to play a rematch again but for these seniors to play their last game of each of their four years here, on state final Saturday, that's pretty special," coach Glover said.

"This is great for us seniors, and the rest of our program. It's pretty cool to have us play in the state final game again," senior Christian Glover said.

"I'm proud of our kids. They worked hard all year for us. It's not the ending we want but we can't be disappointed in our season," Fournier added.

It’s Brunswick again in Class A North
The Dragons capture their fourth straight regional title, cruising to a 14-8 win over Lewiston to remain unbeaten at 15-0.

...“We’ve played them four times and they knew what we were throwing at them, and we knew how we had to execute,” said Christian Glover, a long-stick middie who had a goal and two assists while spearheading the defense. “Communication was really big, and our leaders stepped up.”

Brunswick defeated Lewiston 16-6 and 15-8 in two regular-season matchups, then recorded a 10-5 win in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship game.

“I think we played better against them each time,” said Lewiston Coach Ben Fournier. “We practiced a lot against the zone. We got a lot more looks even though we didn’t capitalize on them.”

Scarborough turns back Thornton in Class A South final
The reigning state champions ride a fast start to a 20-16 win.

...“Marco was really ready (today),” said Hezlep. “(Thornton) shut down (Neugebauer), like Gorham did. Against Gorham, we didn’t handle it very well. We made some adjustments and had some guys really step up and make some plays early. It got us off to a lead we absolutely needed.

“Marco, he’s kinda like our do-it-all guy. He doesn’t score a ton. He’s more of a distributor. But when (Neugebauer) isn’t able to throw the ball in the net, someone has to step up.”

Manfra, a junior attack, scored six times as the Red Storm (12-2) raced to a 7-0 advantage just 11:07 into the game. Four of the goals were in transition when Manfra was left open in front of the net.

Scarborough, Brunswick meet again
Two high-scoring teams clash in the Class A state final, and Cape Elizabeth takes on familiar rival Yarmouth in Class B.

...Both teams have long-pole players who can turn a ground ball into a fast break. For Scarborough, that’s usually Reece Lagerquist and Eric Murray. Brunswick’s Christian Glover is an offensive force with the long pole, with 38 goals and 26 assists.

Scarborough’s leading scorer, Sam Neugebauer (58 goals, 12 assists), has been held in check in the playoffs by Gorham and Thornton – leaving openings for Marco Manfra (33 goals, 23 assists) to score 13 playoff goals, including nine against Thornton. Marc Guerette (43 goals, 18 assists) and Cam Thibault (24 goals, 13 assists) are also threats.

For Brunswick, sophomore attack Aiden Glover has 62 goals and 37 assists. Max Gramins (41 goals, 18 assists) and Josh Dorr (38 goals, 11 assists) are also experienced and dangerous scorers

Brunswick tops Scarborough in epic OT battle

PORTLAND — The Brunswick High School lacrosse team was 10 seconds away from a second straight defeat to Scarborough in the Class A state championship. This one would have been tougher to take.

Down by one in the dying embers of the rematch at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, Brunswick senior Josh Dorr came out of a timeout and got the ball behind the net. He watched the seconds tick down from 40, to 30, to 20 and then made his move. He darted around the other side of the cage and rifled in the equalizer with 10.3 ticks left.

Once in overtime, the Dragons weren’t going to be denied. Even after Scarborough took the ball away on their opening possession and then called a timeout to craft the final play, the Brunswick senior class stepped up again. This time it was captain Christian Glover poking the ball away from Sam Neugebauer and taking it down the field. He dished it off and soon his brother Aiden Glover had it behind the net. The play was on.

Brunswick denies Scarborough's repeat bid in OT game for the ages

PORTLAND—After a game like this, you can see why Scarborough coach Joe Hezlep feels the need to retire.

That’s because he aged a couple of decades in a couple whirlwind hours Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

And wound up with nothing but heartbreak to show for it.

Heartbreak, but appreciation as well.
