Lewiston beats Mt. Ararat, advances to A North semifinals

...Good start, but we still want to string together a full game,” Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said. “We took our foot off the pedal a little bit and Mt. Ararat kept plugging away, and they almost clawed back a few times.

“Overall, we played well. A win’s a win. We’ll definitely take it.”

The Blue Devils (9-4) advance to face Messalonskee in the A North semifinals Saturday at Lewiston High School. Messalonskee rallied to beat Edward Little 12-10 on Wednesday.

Messalonskee boys' lacrosse clips Edward Little

...After Messalonskee's Connor Smith scored the first of his three goals, giving the Eagles a seemingly controlling 5-2 early lead, the Red Eddies began mixing things up offensively. First getting an unassisted goal from Ganan Mancini with 4:27 remaining followed a minute later with a Cam Audette score quickly making it a one goal game.

"We lost momentum in the second quarter. They did things offensively like slowing things down that we just couldn't defend," added Sheridan.

Mancini tried to tie the score but his shot hit the post with 1:10 left giving Messalonsee a chance to get a goal back. Austin Pelletier's shot was stopped by Asselin setting up the games' equalizer with just 14 seconds left by Alex Landry to tie the game at the half.

"Our kids were ready to play today. We knew we could run with them and give them a game. Once we started scoring, their energy went up another level," added Dock.

Messalonskee boys lacrosse holds off Edward Little
Eagles advance to Class A North semifinals.

...No. 3 Messalonskee improved to 8-5 on the season and will play at No. 2 Lewiston on Saturday in the semifinals. The Red Eddies finished 7-6.

“We played pretty well in the first quarter,” Sheridan said. “Second and third quarters were not our sharpest work. We’ve got a younger team. We graduated a lot of seniors last year. New leaders had to step up…At least we’re there (for the semifinals). Sometimes you don’t always win pretty, but it’s better to win ugly than lose pretty.”

Tied 5-5 entering the second half, Edward Little notched three goals in the third quarter off the stick of Gannon Mancini. Messalonskee answered with goals by Colin Kinney and Connor Smith, and trailed Edward Little 8-7 at the start of the fourth and final stanza.

Cheverus, down by seven goals, rallies to top Deering, 15-12
The Stags come from an 8-1 deficit to beat the Rams 15-12 in the quarterfinals of the Class A North boys' lacrosse tournament

...“We had it right there,” Richards said. “It was a blessing in dis–, well, it was a nightmare in disguise, really. You start to see kids (thinking), ‘Oh, we’re up by seven. We can pull our foot off the gas.’ ”

In a stunning turnaround, the Stags poured in four goals in the final 1:05 of the half and surged to a 15-12 victory Wednesday night. Cheverus (10-3) advanced to the regional semifinals Saturday against top-ranked Brunswick (14-0).

“I’ve never been down that much and come back,” said Cheverus Coach Bill Bodwell.

“It’s kind of neat to experience that at a young age and persevere. You don’t get a lot of opportunities in life to do that.”

Thornton gets past South Portland, 13-10
John Giroux scores six goals and sparks a key outburst to help the Trojans reach the Class A South regional championship.

...“For our seniors, we’ve got a couple boys (who have been) here for three years, (and) South Portland has ended their year every year,” Thornton Coach Ryan Hersey said. “We just said we can’t let our seniors go away with all four losses in playoffs against South Portland.

The Red Riots (10-4) beat Thornton in the quarterfinals last year after victories in the semifinals the two previous seasons. But too many South Portland mistakes, dropped balls and the inability to contend with Thornton’s transition offense were too much this time.

“Its always a big battle between TA and SoPo in the playoffs,” South Portland Coach Tom Fiorini said. “It was a good game, a well-played game today. I am proud of my guys. … This year was their time. The ball rolled their way today. They played a good game today. My hat’s off to them.”

Lewiston takes down Messalonskee to reach regional final

...Adding importance to the Blue Devils was that Saturday’s game was the last sporting event on Don Roux Field. The dismantling of the stands and the adjacent baseball field have already begun, and in the near future the field will be a parking lot.

“A playoff game at home, and the last time playing on this field,” Lewiston junior Alex Rivet said. “We’ve been playing on this field (for a long time), I’ve been playing on this field since my freshman year. So many generations have been playing here.

“So I think we wanted to end on a good note. It’s better to end on a good note, especially if it’s the last time you’re going to play on something.”
