Trojans drop heartbreaker to Scarborough, 18-17

SACO — The Thornton Academy boys lacrosse team dropped a tough 18-17 overtime loss to visiting Scarborough in a wild match on Tuesday afternoon.

There were a combined 35 goals, 97 shots and six different lead changes, however, the Red Storm were able to net the game-winner just 34 seconds into the extra period on a shot from Marc Guerette.

TA entered the fourth quarter down 16-14, but were able to tie the score midway through the period and take the 17-16 lead with just 2:16 remaining. Scarborough would answer back with the tying goal with 36 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

“I think (Scarborough) has a little bit more experience in these types of games, we haven’t been challenged at all this year,” said TA coach Ryan Hersey after the loss. “They lost one in overtime last week. We have had a lot of guys stepping up, playing well defensively ... but I just think experience was definitely a factor.”

Thornton Academy: ups the tempo, collects a victory

Thornton ups the tempo, collects a victory
The Trojans score 14 consecutive goals during an 18-6 win.

...I’m glad that once again, it showed that if we keep on sticking with pushing the ball and playing a high-intensity offense, that goals will come in bunches,” Thornton Coach Ryan Hersey said. “It’s a strategy Bates (College) is using and other colleges are using – push the ball and get as many shots on goal as possible, and not worry if you lose possession of the ball.”

Thornton made it 14 consecutive goals with the first two scores of the third quarter, opening a 16-3 advantage, before C.J. Thorne of Biddeford recorded his second of four goals.

The Tigers went 23 minutes, 28 seconds without scoring.

Thornton Academy notches a 14-7 win over Gorham
The Trojans remain second in the Class A South Heal point standings with a convincing victory.

...Gorham finished the regular season at 9-3 and appears to be locked in to the No. 4 seed.

Thornton’s top scorer Noah Edborg had five goals and one assist. Sophomores C.J. Labreck and Thomas Levasseur both added three goals.

“This win was very important. Like Coach said, the real season started tonight,” said Edborg. “If we lost we would have dropped all the way to (the fourth seed) and would have to play on a grass field (sooner). We don’t like doing that; we’d rather play on our turf.”
