Forecaster: Spring athletes shine despite rain and cold-Portland edition

Boys’ lacrosse
Deering’s boys’ lacrosse team enjoyed a rivalry win last week. The Rams went to Portland Tuesday night looking to avenge a loss to the Bulldogs from last year and were able to do so, racing to a 6-1 lead and never looking back, as Nick James and Jonah Peterson both scored four goals in an 18-9 triumph.

“It’s a great feeling to get a win against them,” James said. “We went six years undefeated against Portland, so last year was a heartbreaker.”

“These guys have waited for this game since last year,” said Deering coach Jon Dubois. “It was really big for us to get this one back.”

Forecaster: Mid-Coast athletes shine despite rain and cold

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team continues to set the standard. The Dragons improved to 5-0 after recent wins over visiting Morse (20-4) and Mt. Ararat (13-8), in a game played at Bowdoin College. Brunswick was home against Kennebunk in a crossover Thursday, visits Lewiston Friday and plays at Messalonskee Tuesday of next week.

Time to think playoffs; Spring season winds down-Portland edition

Boys’ lacrosse
Cheverus’ boys’ lacrosse team started the week 6-3 and fourth in the Class A North Heals after an 11-3 loss at defending Class A champion Scarborough and an 18-3 home victory over Noble. Goalie Sean Walsh made 17 saves against the Red Storm, but it wasn’t enough.

“Sean’s a very good goalie,” said Stags coach Bill Bodwell. “I think he’s the best in the league this year. He gave us a chance.”

Max Coffin scored five times and Finn Cawley and Chris St. John added three goals apiece in the victory. Cheverus was home against Westbrook Tuesday, plays at Portland Friday and closes at Marshwood Wednesday of next week.
