Mustangs are looking to take next step

WATERBORO — Entering the 2016 spring, the Massabesic boys lacrosse team was coming off a disappointing 0-12 season in 2015, and were hoping to experience a culture change as well as improve on the field. The Mustangs beat the odds in 2016, taking a young roster who had not been used to winning to a 5-7 regular season and a playoff berth for the first time since 2012...

SJ Boys' lacrosse preview: Lewiston looking to take the next step

... "Instead of lacrosse being a sport the kids play to fill time in the spring, you're seeing more and more players are making it their main sport and finding opportunities to play year round," Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said.

Lewiston is one of several teams that hopes to build on last season and make a strong push for the playoffs. Winthrop/Maranacook, Mt. Blue, and Hebron Academy all look make the playoffs again this year. Oak Hill, Oxford Hills, and St. Dom's will continue to work hard with hopes of post season play.

Last year Lewiston went 9-3, advancing to the playoffs before losing to Windham, 9-8, in the first round.

Offense wanted: Cony boys lacrosse has holes to fill
Rams senior Chad Bickford looks to lead the attack this season.

... “Where the difficulty comes is having the expectation to win, but also realizing how much work goes into winning, too,” Cony head coach Chad Foye said. “It seemed kind of easy at times last year, but there were a lot of kids that really busted their tails and worked really hard to make that happen. It’s about getting back that mindset.”

The Rams scored 210 goals across their 15 games last season, with the Sprouls netting more than 60 percent of those, Foye said.

Cony, which opens against Maranacook/Winthrop at Kents Hill School at 5 p.m. Thursday, will look to senior attack Chad Bickford to grow into the role vacated by Bret Sproul.

MCI/Nokomis boys lacrosse ready for first varsity season
Co-operative team joins MPA fold after two years as club program.

...“If an outsider were to come and spend the day at one of our practices, unaware of the composition, they would have no idea it was two separate schools,” said Hopkins, the team’s coach and the headmaster at MCI. “They are one team, and they don’t care what school they’re from.”

It’s the third year that MCI and Nokomis have been an official cooperative program, but this is the first season it’s making the jump to the varsity level. MCI/Nokomis will play in Class A North, and while it’s newcomers to the Maine Principals’ Association picture, the players are confident that they’re ready for it.

“I’m not going to go in thinking we’re going to lose any game,” said attackman Nick Bolliger, a Nokomis senior. “Personally, I think we can hang with anybody. … We can compete with anybody if we play our game.”

CM Boys lacrosse preview: Messalonskee, Cony seek high finishes again
Eagles, Rams look to build on successful 2016 campaigns and challenge for titles

... “We’re pretty excited about the kids we have coming up this year,” Messalonskee coach Tom Sheridan said. “I think we’re all pretty disappointed at how last season ran out. … I think a lot of our players felt we should have gone further than we did.”

With talent everywhere, it’s easy to see why confidence is high for the Eagles. Dawson Charles is back in net and Chase Borssen, Yan Gusmanov and Nick Poulliot lead an experienced defense, but it’s a vaunted midfield led by standouts Austin Pelletier and Alden Balboni and an attack led by returning top goal scorer Connor Smith that will be the Messalonskee backbone.

“Obviously, the state championship is our goal,” Sheridan said. “We’re a lot younger, but I think a lot of these kids come in with playing experience.”
