Amid breathless trade speculation, Celtics' best bet is patience

Back at February's trade deadline, rumors swirled that the Boston Celtics had engaged the Atlanta Hawks in talks about a potential swap involving Al Horford. While the Celtics certainly wouldn't have minded adding the four-time All-Star five months earlier than they ultimately did in signing him last week, the Celtics ultimately reasoned it wasn't worth moving key assets to secure a player who soon would be available on the open market.

It serves as a worthy reminder as the Celtics find themselves engulfed in breathless trade speculation this week. The chatter is understandable, yet largely circumstantial. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge repeatedly has said the team is not done with its roster construction and, given Boston's incomparable pile of trade assets, it's almost too easy to attach the Celtics to any star who might eventually become available.

Bleacher Report cited "rival general managers" while suggesting that Russell Westbrook could become available via trade and pegged the Celtics as the "most likely destination." Sporting News cited "front-office sources" while suggesting that Blake Griffin is a "likely target" for Boston.

Rumor: Despite big-name dreams, Celtics more likely to land Sixers’ Jahlil Okafor

The Boston Celtics have been in the middle of the swirling vortex of NBA trade rumors this summer: Danny Ainge has been reaching out to Oklahoma City about Russell Westbrook, the Sacramento Kings about DeMarcus Cousins, the L.A. Clippers about Blake Griffin, and any other star he could pair with just signed Al Horford.

Except, none of those are likely if you talk to people around the league. The Kings are not moving Cousins in the short-term — certainly not before they move into a brand new building, plus they want to make it work and are counting on new coach Dave Joerger to pull the pieces together. The Thunder want to rebuild around Westbrook and bring in another star, they just can’t get him to commit to an extension. The Clippers are a win now team that is only going to move Griffin if they get another star back, someone who will help keep Chris Paul in house next summer when he can opt out.

Despite all their assets, the Celtics do not have the pieces to get those guys right now, despite what some Celtics fans think. The fantastic A. Sherrod Blakely laid out both the reasons and a more likely scenario at CSNNE.com.

Celtics Showed Kevin Durant 'Everything We Had' On Warriors During Free Agency Pitch

... “We were the only team in the NBA to beat both (Cleveland and Golden State) on their home court — the only team in the NBA, the Boston Celtics. We told him that. We played him clips from both games and told him basically the scouting report of how we guarded Steph (Curry) and Klay (Thompson) — our entire game plan, basically. That’s what made me mad. We (expletive) told him everything we do to beat these guys, and we beat them, and he went and joined them. I mean, that’s part of the process, but I did not think he would go to those two teams…I felt like afterward, I was talking to Isaiah, like maybe after you sit back, you shouldn’t have told him everything, but who the (expletive) thought he was going to Golden State, realistically? It was like a slap in the face for us, basically.”

Drawing parallels between the 2007 Kevin Garnett trade and 2016 Celtics rumors

The Celtics have been involved in a number of rumors this summer. What can be learned from the reporting of the 2007 Kevin Garnett trade saga?

...So let’s consider the present. Earlier this month, a flurry of rumors suggested the Celtics were in pursuit of Russell Westbrook and/or Blake Griffin, but things have rapidly been hushed over the past week. Many fans already consider the summer over, especially after the Celtics agreed to sign four players last Saturday — though those deals still aren’t official.

But if history is any indication, it’s at least plausible that teams have entered the same stage the Celtics and Wolves did in 2007. It doesn’t mean the Celtics are in talks for those players, but it’s possible. It’s also possible the Thunder have entered an elevated stage of renegotiate-and-extend talks with Westbrook. Or another team, like the Lakers, are in pursuit of Westbrook.

There is plenty that can be learned from the past though, so let’s take a deep look back at the timeline of events in 2007.

Report: Celtics agree to guaranteed contract with Demetrius Jackson, partially guaranteed deal with Ben Bentil

Dan Feldman
NBC Sports•July 24, 2016
The Celtics are slowly but surely taking care of their eight (!) 2016 draft picks. They’ll sign No. 3 pick Jaylen Brown. No. 16 pick Guerschon Yabusele and No. 23 pick Ante Zizic will remain overseas. The Nos. 31 and 35 picks were traded for a future first-rounder on draft night. And Boston has reached terms with No. 45 pick Demetrius Jackson and No. 51 pick Ben Bentil. Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe: As second-rounders, neither Jackson nor Bentil count against the cap until signed. So, the Celtics — with a little cap space plus the room exception and minimum-salary exceptions available — might wait a while to officially sign either player. Jackson would give Boston 16 players — one more

Report: Celtics-76ers trade talks on Jahlil Okafor have grown ‘stale’

The Celtics were reportedly interested in Jahlil Okafor, but they aren’t willing to give up much.

You know where that leads.

Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald:

It’s possible the Celtics and Philadelphia could revisit talks for Jahlil Okafor, but, according to sources, those talks appear to have grown “stale.”

The 76ers still want to trade Okafor or Nerlens Noel, but Philadelphia also doesn’t want to sell low. With Al Horford, Amir Johnson, Kelly Olynyk and Tyler Zeller already at center, it’s unlikely Boston surrenders enough to tempt the 76ers.

Celtics spice up preseason schedule with games vs. Hornets
The Celtics normally stick to Atlantic Division foes in the preseason, but this year will feature a home-and-home exhibition series with the Hornets.

Danny Ainge, the Boston Celtics, and the Master Plan

...A perfectly executed plan coming to fruition is rare. Most plans rely a lot more on happenstance and opportunism than their architects would care to admit. Simple plans tend to play the law of averages and are heavily dependent on luck. Complicated plans, if done correctly, require more planning than would seem possible.

Danny Ainge has masterminded an exceedingly complicated plan when it comes to Boston’s rebuilding path. It’s a plan in which he has attempted to account for all the volatilities of the market, navigate the complexities of the draft and meet the challenge of moving toward contention while staying competitive.

It’s ‘The Process’ Boston-style, and so far it seems to be working, even though there’s plenty who might believe it isn’t.

Rumors for a reason

Where our 5 can beat your 5, mostly

Even lacking the big trade many fans desire, it’s fair to say there’s plenty of optimism among Celtics faithful for the upcoming season. The reasons are spelled out nicely in the No. 7 ranking above. In just two years, Boston has elevated from a lottery team to (at least according to this one panel of writers) the edge of elite status.

The only bad news in this article is that Toronto is ranked No. 6. The Raptors figure to be the Celtics’ prime competition for the second spot in the East, behind Cleveland, obviously.
On the good news side, the Lakers and Nets are ranked No. 28 and 29, respectively. (Insert laughing-so-hard-I’m-crying emoji.)

WESTBROOK EXTENDS WITH OKC, HOW DOES IT IMPACT THE CELTICS?

There were rumblings this past month that the Celtics were pursuing Russell Westbrook in what could’ve been a seismic trade, but Westbrook is now off the market. The superstar point guard has agreed with Oklahoma City on a three-year, $85 million contract extension, according to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski (first reported by Sonics Rising’s Kevin Nesgoda).

This impacts the Celtics in a number of ways.

Most immediately, it removes one of the best options in any potential deal this summer. Westbrook is a Hall of Fame talent that would’ve made the Celtics an instant contender this season. Danny Ainge will have to back to the drawing board to design a new scheme to acquire a star.

Perhaps the greatest implication will be felt next offseason.
