Superman (Dwight Howard) could rescue Celtics

It’s getting to the point for Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge that he needs to make a significant move. He can’t let the summer pass without adding a major free agent, even if that means overpaying, and even if that means signing a player who has an unsavory history and limitations.

That’s what makes the marriage between the Celtics and Dwight Howard a perfect one. They desperately need each other, and the Celtics will meet with Howard’s representatives as free agency begins Thursday at midnight.

Evan Turner sad to leave Celtics, but thrilled with $70M payday in Portland

Evan Turner woke up Friday morning to a four-year, $70 million offer from Portland that changed his world.

“I’m coming from playing my ass off the last two years for three-and-a-half million each year, to get here,” the now former Celtic said after reaching agreement on the deal.

Turner, currently in Santa Barbara, California, working on his 3-pointer with a shooting coach, had gone to sleep knowing that his agent, Kevin Bradbury, was talking with several teams, most prominently the Knicks.

Hawks’ Horford agrees to four-year, $113M deal with Celtics

Veteran center Al Horford agreed to a four-year, $113 million contract with the Boston Celtics on Saturday night. Horford announced his decision on his Twitter account. “Celtic Pride!!!!!!” he tweeted, followed by 18 green shamrocks. Horford, a four-time All-Star, spent his first nine seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. He has …

It’s a landmark day for Celtics and for Boston
It’s been more than 30 years since the Celtics faithful can recall a day like this, when a premium free agent, a multi-time All-Star willfully chose to join Boston in his prime years.

The surrealism of Saturday for the Celtics cannot be understated. It began with Horford informing teams that he was down to the Celtics and Wizards, each offering a four-year, maximum contract at an estimated $113 million.

It kicked into Venom GT gear when Patriots quarterback, four-time Super Bowl champion, Deflategate defendant, and all-around man of Boston Tom Brady was spotted in the Hamptons as the Celtics were about to meet with Kevin Durant in their attempt to recruit the former MVP.

NBA’s salary cap set at $94.1 million

The NBA’s salary cap for the 2016-17 season has been set at $94.1 million, a huge leap from last season that has led to the enormous deals being given players in free agency.
The cap last season was $70 million. The increase was largely because of revenue increases tied to the league’s new national TV deals, worth about $2.5 billion a year, that begin next season.

The new cap will go in effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on July 7, ending the league’s moratorium period and allowing teams to sign players and make trades.
The tax level will be set at $113.3 million and the minimum team salary, which is 90 percent of the cap, is $84.7 million.

Also, the mid-level for non-taxpayer teams is $5.6 million. The taxpayer mid-level is $3.5 million and the mid-level for a team with room under the cap is $2.9 million.

Celtics Reset: With Kevin Durant Gone, What Comes Next For Boston?

... Roster Reset As for the rest of the roster, the Celtics currently have approximately $97 million on the books, about $3 million over the NBA’s salary cap for the 2016-17 season, per Yahoo! Sports’ calculations. That number includes Horford’s projected cap number, non-guaranteed money for Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko, Jared Sullinger and Tyler Zeller, and cap holds for first-round picks Jaylen Brown, Guerschon Yabusele and Ante Zizic.

With Durant out of the equation, Boston can pick up Johnson’s and Jerebko’s options for next season without having to worry about tying up cap room for a loaded 2017 free-agent class, and The Boston Globe is reporting that league sources indicate that’s precisely what they’ll do.

If they let Sullinger and Zeller walk in restricted free agency, they cut another $12 million in cap holds off that salary total (though it would be much more if either decided to remain here). Should Yabusele and Zizic play overseas, the Celtics get even more room. Don’t be shocked if their second-round picks get cut or sent overseas as well.

This flexibility is key for Boston, who almost certainly still will search for another star to pair with Horford, Isaiah Thomas and the rest of its playoff core.

Report: Celtics’ Sullinger headed to Raptors.

Less than 24 hours after becoming an unrestricted free agent, former Boston forward Jared Sullinger has found a new home in Toronto. ESPN was the first to report that the Raptors and the 24-year-old power forward had struck a deal said to be in the $6 million range. Sullinger started …
