Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge explained why he considered the Cleveland Cavaliers less than "ideal" as a trade partner this summer but still opted to pull off a move for Kyrie Irving.

During a recent interview with the Boston Sports Journal's Brian Robb, Ainge admitted he would have preferred to make a blockbuster trade with another team.

"You know what, I think dealing with Cleveland, it's not ideal," Ainge said. "It's not ideal to deal with your rival. They probably had some trepidation and vice versa, but ultimately it was just trying to do what was best to build our team."

Added Ainge: "Both Boston and Cleveland were very aware of who our trading partners were. We know Cleveland is our greatest competition in the East right now and we know we are giving them some good players, some good options. We felt like we are getting a great one."

The Patriots hold off the Jets, the Bruins fall to the Golden Knights, and the Celtics are one day closer to their season opener.

‘It’s just hoops, man’: When asked if he would have to brace himself for the crowd at the Celtics’ upcoming season opener, Kyrie Irving offered a firm “no.”

On Tuesday, the point guard will be returning to his former home court in Cleveland for the first time since getting traded but doesn’t seem concerned about the inevitable boisterous environment.

“It’s just hoops, man,” he told reporters on Sunday. “Just hoops.”

10 key questions before Boston Celtics

After one of the least restful (and most exciting) offseasons in recent memory, the Boston Celtics are finally about to finally play games that count. The first? A matchup that feels like it counts a little extra: Boston tips against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. The game will get underway at 8 p.m. on TNT and NBC Sports Boston (if you prefer Mike Gorman and Tommy Heinsohn's call).

You know the basics. The Celtics now employ Kyrie Irving. The Cavaliers still employ LeBron James, and they now have Isaiah Thomas (who is still injured) and Jae Crowder (who will likely start). The narratives will be out of control throughout the season, but perhaps never more so than on Opening Night.

Youth Serves Up Rout

BOSTON, MA — Youth served the Celtics very well Tuesday night.

Jaylen Brown celebrated his 21st birthday by scoring 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half while Jayson Tatum added 22 as the Celtics pulled away in the first half and blew out the Knicks, 110-89, Tuesday night at TD Garden.

Kyrie Irving pumped in 20 points, while Al Horford had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Celtics, who improved to 2-2. Boston held New York’s Kristaps Porzingis to 3-of-14 shooting and 12 points on the night.

Celtics pick up options on Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier

The Boston Celtics secured several pieces of their developing youth movement today, picking up 2018-19 team options on the rookie-year contracts of Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier. Danny Ainge waited patiently until the Halloween deadline, but ultimately acted as everyone anticipated he would.
