Celtics Draft Big Board 2018 2.0

On Monday, Marvin Bagley announced he would reclassify and join the college ranks this season, having graduated high school a year early. Bagley committed to play for Duke, which cemented its status as a potential championship contender. Bagley’s reclassification was great news for the Boston Celtics, who could have two high draft picks in an already top-heavy class that is now even more top heavy.

Bagley’s reclassification (paired with the fact that I’ve been unhappy with my last mock draft since I posted it — go read and throw tomatoes at here) means it’s time for another Celtics big board.

We are going to do things a little differently this time. It’s possible — perhaps even likely — the Celtics could miss out on getting the Lakers pick (protected to stay with Philadelphia unless it lands between 2-5, in case you missed it) this season, and it’s also possible the Nets pick could be outside the top five. For that reason, we’ll break down everyone we have in the Celtics’ top 10 by their skill set as well as their potential fit in Boston.
Let’s take a closer look at the class. ... ard_2.html

Celtics Acquire Four-Time All-Star Kyrie Irving

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired four-time All-Star and 2016 NBA Champion Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for guard Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic and the rights to the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first round pick.

“Kyrie is one of the best scorers in the NBA. He has proven that on the biggest stage, the NBA Finals, the last three years,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “He’s been an NBA Champion, an Olympic Gold Medalist, and a four-time All-Star. For all he’s accomplished, we think his best years are ahead of him.”

“Isaiah and Jae have been a huge part of our success,” said Celtics Co-Owner and Governing Partner Wyc Grousbeck. “Isaiah’s playoff performance under very difficult circumstances will live on in history, and we wish them all the best.”

Selected by Cleveland with the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Irving, 25, has posted career averages of 21.6 points (45.7% FG, 38.3% 3-PT, 87.3% FT), 3.4 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.32 steals and 34.2 minutes in 381 games (all starts) throughout six seasons with the Cavaliers. The 6-3 guard has registered a scoring average north of 20.0 points in four of his six NBA seasons, including a career-high 25.2 points in 2016-17.

Grousbeck justifies trading for Kyrie Irving

For those who were left stunned and dazed at Tuesday’s trade that went down between the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers, allow Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck to make a proverbial snapping of the finger to get you out of a catatonic state.

Speaking to Chris Villani of the Boston Herald, Grousbeck offered a bit of an explanation as to why Boston pulled the trigger and went all in for Kyrie Irving. ... ie-irving/

Thomas' hip injury might void trade

After undergoing a physical with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Isaiah Thomas reportedly might put the blockbuster deal between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers on hold due to his injured hip.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted Friday night that the Cavaliers are still evaluating Thomas' injured hip and are "weighing options" with the completion of the deal that sent Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Nets' 2018 first-round pick to Cleveland and dealt Kyrie Irving to Boston.

Wojnarowski added that Thomas flew into Cleveland, took an exam and then flew out of town. If players do not pass their physical, Wojnarowski noted that a potential deal could be voided. ... might.html

Reports: Celtics may play hardball, refuse to add anything to Kyrie Irving trade

The Cleveland Cavaliers got a look at Isaiah Thomas‘ hip injury and balked.

Thomas was headed to Cleveland in a blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston and brought Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and most importantly Brooklyn’s unprotected pick in the 2018 draft to Cleveland. Most people, myself included, thought this was a great deal for the Cavaliers, more than they should have expected to get when they had no leverage (everyone knew Irving had asked for a trade). But after looking at Thomas’ hip and realizing he could miss part of the season, the Cavaliers thought it was not enough and would ask for more compensation to finalize the trade, most likely another draft pick (a second rounder, perhaps).

Boston doesn’t sound like it is going to throw anything else in the deal, according to multiple reports. ... ing-trade/

Celtics agree to add 2020 2nd round pick to complete Kyrie Irving deal

At long last, the Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to terms on a (new) deal that will bring Kyrie Irving to Boston, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

With the Cavaliers being unhappy with what they found during Isaiah Thomas’s physical, it’s easy to understand why new GM Koby Altman would seek further compensation.

But all reports have indicated that Boston and Danny Ainge were completely transparent when it came to the extent of Thomas’s balky hip. There should have been no surprises, so it’s no wonder that Ainge held firm on his original offer, especially since he was already surrendering what was arguably the franchise’s most valuable asset.

As Wojnarowski made clear earlier in the week, the 2018 Brooklyn pick was always the main prize for Cleveland, as it gave them a great chance at landing a blue-chip prospect in next year’s draft since the Celtics weren’t willing to part with either Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum. ... rie-irving

The Boston Celtics introduced their new star core on Friday, with Kyrie Irving surreally taking his place next to Gordon Hayward on the dais. The presser was filled with the usual pomp and circumstance and polite commentary. Danny Ainge refused to answer questions about the process of acquiring Irving and the holdup over Isaiah Thomas' hip. Irving called the Celtics an "illustrious" organization (about four times), while Hayward said the difference in Boston's fans was how intelligent they are. (One more for the road, Jazz fans. )

Irving commented on his relationship with LeBron James, briefly, saying he hadn't spoken to his superstar former teammate, but that a bond of brotherhood would always be there (despite Irving specifically asking to end their partnership).

But lost in the bigger headlines and the "wow" moment of this new "super-team" was a subtle indication of where the Celtics have transitioned to. ... evens/amp/

Doc Rivers raves about Danny Ainge’s Celtics overhaul

Doc Rivers has seen his share of crazy NBA offseasons, but this one may take the cake.

The former Celtics coach and now the coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, Rivers can attest to this summer’s madness after his team lost Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets back in June. But he’s still keeping a close eye on his former team.

When he saw the Celtics swing a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving last week, Rivers wasn’t surprised. Moves like that are just what he’s come to expect from Danny Ainge.

And he thinks it’s made the C’s better, too. ... s_overhaul

'It was definitely the toughest call I ever had to make,’ Danny Ainge on IT Trade

It was the toughest call Danny Ainge has ever had to make as a general manager, reaching out to Isaiah Thomas, who had given so much to the Celtics, to tell him that he had been traded.

Thomas described the call in a first-person account in The Players’ Tribune. He had just celebrated his one-year wedding anniversary and Ainge had texted him to give him a call as soon as possible.

When Thomas did, Ainge quickly revealed that he had traded Thomas to the Cavaliers in a package for Kyrie Irving. ... story.html
