Celtics load up, make six picks in NBA draft

NEW YORK – The Boston Celtics owned a draft-high three first round picks – along with the Philadelphia 76ers – and a whopping eight selections total. Surprisingly, general manager Danny Ainge elected to hold steady at the top of the draft.

Most draft pundits expected Boston to deal some of their picks. Instead, they made all of their first-round selections, much to the chagrin of many of the Celtics faithful in Brooklyn who wanted to see the team wheel and deal for an established veteran.

The lone trade made was a swap of No. 31 and 35 (Deyonta Davis and Rade Zagorac) for a 2019 first-round pick from the Memphis Grizzlies. That left the Celtics with six picks total.

Jaylen Brown Determined to 'Go to War' for Boston

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics fell in love with Jaylen Brown the moment he stepped on the court at their practice facility in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The California-Berkley forward brought a unique blend of athleticism, versatility, determination and intelligence that sparked the interest of Boston’s basketball ops staff – so much that it opted to select him with the No. 3 overall pick in Thursday night’s NBA Draft.

Brown was the first of eight selections made by the Celtics on Draft Night. The organization kept six of those picks, while trading away Nos. 31 and 35 to Memphis for a future pick. Also joining the C’s during the busy evening was Guerschon Yabusele (No. 16), Ante Zizic (No. 23), Demetrius Jackson (No. 45), Ben Bentil (No. 51) and Abdel Nader (No. 58).

2016 NBA Draft Winners and Losers: OKC makes out, Celtics underwhelm
Boston fails to make a splash, international players steal the show and both the Magic and OKC fare well in their trade

... LOSERS
Boston Celtics
Celtics fans had hopes coming into the night of walking away with Jimmy Butler, Khris Middleton, Kevin Love or DeMarcus Cousins.

They walked away with Jaylen Brown, Guerschon Yabusele and Ante Zizic.
Oh, and they didn't thin their already overloaded roster.

Oh, and they missed out on a lot of top-flight prospects that tumbled down the draft. Having eight picks in a weak draft was always going to be tough, but the Celtics absolutely needed to walk away with more than they got. They could have had Kris Dunn, who several teams were still wanting.

The Wolves never pulled off a draft-night trade for Jimmy Butler, but were in talks all night because the Bulls were so interested in Dunn. The same was not true for Brown, who finds himself in a weird spot with Jae Crowder and the plethora of two-guards in Boston.

It's draft night, so it's entirely possible that one of the overseas players will turn out to be phenomenal. Draft night analysis so often looks terrible. But you can't examine what the Celtics came out with, especially relative to expectations, and consider them winners. On what was supposed to be one of the biggest nights in Celtics history, they came up with a big pile of "meh." -- Moore

6 N.E. products in the draft:

New England’s NBA Draft

he 2016 NBA Draft takes place tonight, live from the Barclays Center and on ESPN with coverage beginning at 7pm.

So who are the New England products hoping to hear their name called? Here's a rundown of the list:

Kris Dunn, New London HS, CT Basketball Club, Providence College - The former McDonald's All-American spent the first two years of his college career sidelined by a shoulder injury but made up for lost time in his third and fourth years with the Friars. Now, he has a Big East Player of the Year award to his name and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA tournament.

TANGUAY: CELTICS SHOULD STEER CLEAR OF AL HORFORD

The Celtics reportedly are taking a look at free agent Al Horford.

Ah, why?

Wait. Make that WHY?

If you're going with someone like Jaylen Brown, you don't pursue a Grade B free agent like Horford. Or even think about making a deal for Kevin Love. When the Celtics decided not to deal the third pick for an Okafor, Noel or Butler, and instead went for a player who'll need several years to fully develop, the course for this offseason was set.

Now, if the Celtics wow the daylights out of Kevin Durant and land him, Horford would be a nice addition for a less-than-max deal. But, despite my fanboy optimism in regard to a Durant signing, the chances are slim that KD will land in Boston.

Sources: Hawks, Celtics secure Howard meetings
Dwight Howard, who became a free agent when he declined his player option with the Rockets, has granted meetings to the Hawks and Celtics, sources say.
