Celtics lose third straight, 123-108 to Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Wizards arrived dressed in black funeral wear for what they openly labeled a grudge match.

Bradley Beal made sure they won it.

Beal scored 13 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, and the Wizards extended their home winning streak to 14 games with a 123-108 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

Celtics engage thrusters, burn Rockets 120-109

BOSTON — How do you recover from a demoralizing 12-foul, 3-technical second quarter?

A 14-3 run to open the second half is a good start. On a night where the Celtics looked like they would continue to flounder against a dominant guard and rim-crushing bigs, they found their fire in the second half and beat the Houston Rockets 120-110.

Things went from ugly to bloody when a flailing James Harden elbow-smashed Jonas Jerebko in the face, sending blood pouring out. Harden would receive a flagrant-one after replays showed relatively incidental contact. Jerebko would end up getting four stitches to his upper lip and is expected to play Friday against Orlando.

Sanders himself later confirmed it is his intention to return to the NBA:
He also posted in Instagram that he had worked out with an NBA team recently and later followed up that post with one saying: “Boston what’s good?”

Sanders last played for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2014-15 season. That year he announced he would leave the NBA due to personal reasons and Milwaukee waived him via the Stretch Provision in February 2015. Sanders is on the Bucks’ cap sheet through the 2021-22 season at an amount of $1,865,547.00 per season. That figure would reduce after each year if he is under contract with another team for that season.

Celtics hammer Magic; engage in trade talks for Vucevic

BOSTON (AP) — Isaiah Thomas had 21 points and eight assists in just three quarters, extending his streak of scoring at least 20 points to 30 straight games as Boston set a season high in scoring while beating the Orlando Magic 128-98 on Friday night.

Rookie Jaylen Brown added a career-high 20 points, Jae Crowder scored 19 and Kelly Olynyk made all seven shots he attempted, finishing with 16 points.

It was the most points for Boston since a 127-123 overtime loss to Portland on Jan. 21 and topped the Celtics’ previous high in regulation, set Nov. 3 in a 128-122 loss to the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers.

Celtics could help facilitate a deal to send Carmelo to Clippers

The Knicks haven't given up hope on including the Celtics as a partner in a potential deal for Carmelo Anthony, sending a scout to Saturday's Celtics-Bucks game.

While Celtics management told the Knicks they aren't interested in the nine-time All-Star, the Knicks are pushing to move Anthony, according to an NBA source, and they're intrigued by some of the Celtics' players.

A source indicated that Knicks president Phil Jackson has instructed management to move Anthony, who has a no-trade clause but included the Celtics as one of the teams for whom he'd waive the clause. Boston could become part of a potential three-team deal that would send Anthony to another club, perhaps the Clippers.

Thomas, Celtics fire by past Detroit Pistons, 113-109

BOSTON -- Isaiah Thomas usually punctuates big buckets with a point to his wrist or a stream of shouts at nobody in particular, but barely celebrated Monday night after punching in a fourth-quarter layup to push the Boston Celtics back into the lead.

Maybe he did not feel like screaming on a night the Celtics wasted a double-digit lead and forced themselves, one more time, to pull out a close win. Perhaps he barely reacted because his team's defense slipped during the fourth quarter, as it has too often this season, or because he figured he would need to continue pumping in points to hold off the Detroit Pistons -- which he did during Boston's 113-109 win.

Maybe he just wanted to save the celebration for later, when he had finished scoring 41 points, including 24 in the fourth quarter. The Celtics did not play a flawless game. They did not defend much early, and they let the Pistons come all the way back from a double-digit deficit early in the fourth quarter. They needed Thomas' late scoring brilliance only because they could not stop Andre Drummond inside, and because the Pistons -- despite shooting like donkeys from behind the arc -- managed to pile up one 2-point make after another. Some of Boston's late rebounding was less than inspirational. Smart missed a point-blank layup that would have put his team ahead by four points in the final minute, then contributed to a backcourt violation moments later. Even with Thomas going wild, the Celtics needed Al Horford to swat Reggie Jackson in the final moments to preserve a two-point lead.

Celtics-Raptors — now that’s a playoff series to watch

You could pause again after last night’s game to wonder how Isaiah Thomas continually manages to pull off his fourth quarter fireworks when everybody knows what’s coming.

You could even wonder why the Boston Pops isn’t here to play the “1812 Overture” while he lights up the Garden sky.

But, no, even with 19 of his 44 points in the final frame last evening, there was another thought in mind as we walked away from the parquet floor.

Thomas plays starring role again as Celtics top Lakers

On a night when a Toronto loss punched tickets for Brad Stevens and his assistants to fly to New Orleans for the Feb. 19 NBA All-Star Game, his own team continued to do its own job.

The Celtics, with Friday night’s 113-107 win over a young Lakers team, are now on a season-high six-game run.

Pierce goes out on a high, while Celtics take down Clippers

Far be it for Isaiah Thomas to get in the way of history, especially the history of his own team. So when Paul Pierce got the ball on the left of the 3-point arc, his famous sweet spot, Thomas backed away.

Just as a pitcher named Dan Spillner once attempted to groove a pitch to Carl Yastrzemski on the slugger’s last-ever at-bat, the Celtics guard wanted Pierce’s last shot at the Garden to be immortal.

“Yeah, I wanted him to shoot. I didn’t even think he was going to shoot it, so I tried to back up as much as I could so he could try to make it,” Thomas said. “That’s what he does. Damn, that’s what he does. No matter what the moment is, he always comes through. I’m glad I just got to be a part of it.”
