How an NBA Executive Unearths Hidden Gems Around the Globe

BOSTON — Long gone are the days when international prospects were the stuff of novelty. Kristaps Porzingis putback dunks, Giannis Antetokounmpo coast-to-coast drives and Rudy Gobert contests at the rim further validate the world's place in the NBA.

At the start of the 2013-14 season, more than 20 percent of the NBA was foreign-born, according to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, and now you'd have an impossible time finding an all-American roster.

It's also hard to find a team better positioned to take advantage of the foreign influx available in the 2016 NBA draft than the Boston Celtics. Boston's front office has accumulated eight of the 60 selections available, which equals 13.3 percent of the entire class.

The case for Kris Dunn to the Celtics at No. 3

Ever since the pingpong balls delivered the Boston Celtics the No. 3 pick in a 2016 NBA draft headlined by two players, most Celtics fans have had two preferred draft-night outcomes. Plan A: Trade the pick for an established talent. Plan B: Draft any of the next-tier players not named Kris Dunn.

If there weren't enough angst as the Celtics reportedly struggle to find a willing and desirable trade partner, some Celtics fans cringed when ESPN's Jeff Goodman and Andy Katz both reported on the eve of the draft that Dunn would draw heavy consideration from Boston if it held onto the No. 3 pick.

DeMarcus Cousins to Boston Celtics at the NBA Draft? Playing Danny Ainge to make it happen in a mock draft

Over the past week, I did my best Danny Ainge impression as part of the Hardwood Paroxysm mock draft, in which internet basketball writers take on the role of general manager of a team and draft and trade for their assigned franchise.

In lieu of any big Celtics draft news, here's what I — as faux Danny Ainge — accomplished in the 2016 NBA draft. (Read the full mock here.)

The No. 3 pick

Initially, the general manager of the Phoenix Suns contacted me, asking to move up from No. 4 to No. 3 with the addition of Alex Len (sending back James Young and a late pick to make salaries work). This was a solid offer: Len, at worst, would be Boston's best big off the bench, and could pair nicely with Olynyk. I was perfectly happy to draft Jaylen Brown instead of Dragan Bender, but it seemed possible as the draft approached that bigger prizes could shake loose.

Boston Celtics Trade Rumors: No. 3 Pick Offered To Utah Jazz For Gordon Hayward, To Chicago Bulls For Jimmy Butler

There have been a lot of Boston Celtics trade rumors about that first-round pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. The top two selections have been pretty easy to predict, as Ben Simmons of LSU is expected to go to the Philadelphia 76ers with the No.

Celtics Draft Day. Thursday June 23 ( 7 p.m EST, ESPN)

Postby Tom Nolette » Thu Jun 23, 2016 5:10 am

2016 NBA Draft (Thursday, 7 p.m EST, ESPN).

,,, And this is Simmons, the subject of great NBA interest for many years, a teen sensation in Australia before attending high school in Florida and going to LSU as a mega-recruit standing in a publicity storm. He was a 6-10 freshman who handled the ball on the run, had a high basketball IQ at 19 years old and delivered crisp passes in a pairing of body and style that turned front offices into heretics.

"He's LeBron James physically with Magic Johnson's passing," one executive told NBA.com. "It's ridiculous.... The way he plays, the game slows down for him."
(Said another exec, understanding the burden being dropped on Simmons: "That's not fair.")

let the fun begin in the NBA roster shuffle ....

REPORT: TEAGUE, HILL, PICK SWAPPED IN THREE-TEAM DEAL

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — The Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks are all trying to solve their point guard issues on the eve of Thursday night’s Draft, engaging in a reported three-team deal that would send Hawks All-Star Jeff Teague home to the Pacers, Pacers veteran George Hill to Utah and the No. 12 pick the Jazz own to the Hawks.

The proposed deal, first reported by The Vertical, cannot be finalized until July, for salary cap purposes.

Teague’s departure would indicate the Hawks are ready to turn over their starting point guard spot to Dennis Schroder. The Pacers, under new coach Nate McMillan, would have a homegrown product (Teague starred at Pike High School in Indianapolis) to pair with All-NBA forward Paul George. Pacers boss Larry Bird decided the franchise needed a new leader after this season, replacing Frank Vogel with McMillan, and clearly wants a younger and more dynamic floor leader for his team.
