Summer Celtics prevail over 76ers 88-83

Both the Celtics and 76ers were missing a few key summer league guys tonight. Markelle Fultz’s ankle injury robbed us of another Fultz-Tatum showdown. The Celtics were without Abdel Nader, and Jaylen Brown would leave the game after an injury.

Jaylen Brown, fresh off hosting his teen party, looked dominant early on though. He opened the scoring with a nice turnaround post jumper. Then he followed with a three and a monster block at the rim. That was definitely the high point of his night, as he left the game after taking a knee to the thigh. He briefly returned, but the Celtics ultimately pulled him from the game—which is obviously the right call, even if he wanted to play. “Forget it, Jaylen. It’s Summer League.”

It’s no secret Jayson Tatum is a talented scorer. He continues to show off his offensive repertoire, like his crossover against a big man that switched onto him. He made a few of his usual tough shots, but he still struggled a bit in this game. The Sixers did a nice job using their length to challenge his shots too, holding Tatum to just 6/15 shooting. The 76ers pressured him and caused a few turnovers. But in crunch time he showed up. Tatum found Jackson with a nice assist and scored a clutch driving layup in the last minute.

Are the Celtics good enough now to overthrow Cleveland?

Steve Aschburner: No. I’m not even sure the Celtics as constructed today are good enough to overthrow the 2016-17 Celtics. The players to whom they’ve bid adieu represent several steps backward, with the strides forward from landing Hayward still to be determined. Avery Bradley in particular was a valuable, three-way player for Boston. Three-way? Yes, toting up his offensive, defensive and chemistry contributions. And say what you want about Kelly Olynyk, but he gave the Celtics a combination of size and shooting range that it will miss. All that gnashing of teeth we hear coming out of Cleveland is about the Cavs’ apparent difficulty in narrowing The Finals gap with Golden State, not about Boston or anyone else closing the gap in the East.

Bird soars as summer Celtics defeat defending champ Warriors 93-69

With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Abdel Nader out nursing minor injuries, the start of the summer league playoffs against the Golden State Warriors served as a showcase for some of the unknowns on the Vegas roster. They responded in a 93-69 of the defending champs.

Outside of Tatum, the Celtics drafted three players in the second round: Semi Ojeleye, Jabari Bird, and Kadeem Allen. Ojeleye has looked great in seven games in Utah and Las Vegas. Tonight, he finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds and continued his strong play of defense. With Brad Stevens’ positive comments about Ojeleye’s defensive versatility, he’s more than likely earned himself a contract next season.

Bird made a strong case for one of Boston’s two two-way contracts for next season. He’s not an exceptionally gifted athlete (ahem, sounds like another Bird from Celtics’ history), but he can score from all three levels. He had 17 points on an efficient 8-for-10 shooting.

Celtics release Jordan Mickey

Per a statement released by the Boston Celtics, Jordan Mickey has been released. This was the next logistical move for the Celtics to make before signing Gordon Hayward.

By making the move prior to July 15, the Celtics save $1.47 million which helps them gain more room under the cap to make the Gordon contract possible. The Avery Bradley trade is already official (his Detroit press conference was last night).

I would imagine the Hayward contract and press conference would happen soon. There have been reports that the press conference would occur back in Boston and the team is currently still wrapping up their Las Vegas League playoffs. So that might have to wait till early next week.

Brown enjoys mentor role to Jayson Tatum, young Celtics

LAS VEGAS — Jaylen Brown has slipped into his summer league leadership role not only as a matter of choice, but with ease.

As evidenced by the party he threw Monday night for his fellow summer leaguers — anyone, from any team, interested in a night of legal under-21 fun — Brown envisions himself in a role at the head of the pack.

Eventually, as he and rookie teammate Jayson Tatum mature under the protective wing of their more experienced teammates, that role will emerge with the Celtics.

Celtics officially introduce Marcus Morris and Aron Baynes

The Boston Celtics officially introduced Marcus Morris and Aron Baynes this afternoon, two more of the team’s very busy off-season acquisitions. The former was traded for long-time Celtic Avery Bradley, and the latter signed in free agency for the RME. Both played together in Detroit last year and profile as immediate and meaningful contributors.

Baynes is a bruising, traditional center. Morris a barrel-chested combo forward. Each half of the duo expressed an enthusiasm for being able to play together again. Both are expected to add some much needed physicality to Boston’s roster. Morris indicated as much during his introductory conference call, describing his innate toughness.
