Smart leads comeback, but Boston Celtics fall short

ATLANTA -- After getting exposed by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night, some of the Boston Celtics vowed the loss would help them.

"If anything it brings us together as a team a little bit more," Avery Bradley said.

"This is something we have to look at and learn from," added Al Horford. "I think this will be good for us in the long run though. I think this game is going to be good for us."

Thomas huge late as Celtics outlast Hornets 121-114

At some point this season, Isaiah Thomas turned seemingly every 2016-17 Boston Celtics victory into a cliche.

Time after time, the Celtics have asked Thomas to bail them out of tight situations, and time after time, Thomas is up for the challenge. On Saturday, facing a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit and a Charlotte Hornets squad that refused to go away with their season on the line, Thomas once again spurred the Celtics to a hard-fought win. Thomas scored 32, including nine important points in the fourth quarter, as the Celtics defeated the Hornets 121-114.

The Celtics got off to a slow start. Charlotte scored the first seven points of the game, and Boston appeared out of sync -- giving up a bad turnover and missing several open shots.

Celtics hold off Brooklyn Nets comeback, win 114-105

BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics do not love blowouts.

After avoiding lopsided victories for most of the regular season, the Celtics did so again Monday night, allowing the Brooklyn Nets to challenge them late in the fourth quarter. For the entire first half, Boston looked poised for an easy night, but that changed as Brook Lopez and Justin Hamilton racked up buckets, Jeremy Lin led a parade to the free throw line and the Boston offense stopped functioning. The Celtics saw a 27-point advantage dwindle all the way to five, but still held on, 114-105, for a win that could put them alone in first place by the end of the night.

With a realistic chance to earn the No. 1 seed, the Celtics were hoping the Miami Heat could upend the resting Cleveland Cavaliers. At the time of this post, that game had not finished, but the Heat had overcome a double-digit deficit to force overtime. If Miami wins in the extra session, Boston could win the Eastern Conference by topping the Milwaukee Bucks in their regular-season finale Wednesday.

Celtics clinch No. 1 seed with win in regular season finale

The Boston Celtics entered the final day of the regular season needing a win or a Cleveland Cavaliers loss to secure the No. 1 seed. It got both following a 112-94 win over the Milwaukee Bucks and a Cavs loss to the Toronto Raptors.

The Celtics, who opted to play their starters vs. the Bucks, struggled against Milwaukee's reserves for the majority of the game before pulling away in the fourth quarter. Bucks stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton both rested with the No. 6 seed locked up and a date vs. the No. 3 Toronto Raptors looming.

The Celtics will face No. 8 Chicago Bulls, who won Wednesday night to ensure a postseason trip.

Celtics do nothing to quiet skepticism about their playoff formula

On an emotional Sunday night in Boston, a basketball truth hit the Celtics in the face like a splash of cold water. The Chicago Bulls left TD Garden with a Game 1 victory, 106-102. In handing Boston the loss, Chicago revealed much about the Celtics' playoff formula and the challenges they will face, even in this first round.

The big story was Isaiah Thomas, and rightfully so. Thomas played less than a day after finding out his sister had died in a car accident Saturday at the age of 22. He was emotional before the game and still brought his usual energy for the Celtics, scoring 13 in the first quarter, including this deep triple , on his way to a heroic 33 points. That's the big story.

Celtics embarrass themselves in Game 2 loss to Bulls

It was written in this space before this series that, No. 1 seed be damned, the Celtics were the third-best team in the Eastern Conference, and they’d struggle with Washington to occupy even that rung on the ladder.

It was said here, too, that life would be different in the playoffs when teams focus their defense and there would be no series, first round included, in which the Celts would cruise.

Granted all that, an 0-2 deficit on their home court to the Bulls is nothing less than stunning. We should take into account the tragedy of Isaiah Thomas’ sister’s passing and the residual effect on the Celts in Game 1.

Anthony-to-Celtics scenario could pick up steam

With the Celtics fading in the first round, the chances of Carmelo Anthony wearing green are increasing.

According to an NBA source, the Celtics coaching staff was in favor of trading for Anthony at the trade deadline, but general manager Danny Ainge had too many reservations. One of Ainge’s concerns, according to a source, was an Anthony trade would have given Boston no real cap space to work with for the 2017 free-agent class.

With the top-seeded Celtics possibly on their way to getting swept by the eighth-seeded Bulls, Ainge’s thoughts on adding Anthony could change this July.

Celtics draw even with Bulls

CHICAGO — There has been an Isaiah Thomas watch since his sister’s death, with every bit of body language, every grimace and every smile dissected.

But there was no disputing Thomas’ unsinkable ability to dominate a game last night, with the result a 104-95 Celtics win against the Chicago Bulls, evening their first-round series at 2-2. A series in which the home team has yet to win a game.

“I can’t believe it,” coach Brad Stevens said of what he has seen from Thomas since he received the news the day before Game 1. “What he’s been through and the day-to-day, it’s unfathomable the way he’s performed on the court. It’s been really incredible. What he’s done has been remarkable.”

Bradley steps up in Game 5

BOSTON -- It has been a long time coming.

The Celtics haven’t won a playoff series since the Big Three (plus Rajon Rondo) were last threatening LeBron James in 2012. They’ve been knocked out in the opening round as underdogs each of the last two postseasons, and they opened this year's tournament with a pair of home losses that put them in danger of becoming the second conference champion in the East to be upset by a No. 8 seed in the seven-game era.

Is all of that behind them now? Their 108-97 win over the Bulls in Game 5 on Wednesday night affirmed that the Celtics have turned the negative opening-weekend impressions right-side up. They can close out the series with a fourth straight win Friday night in Chicago.
