What Kevin Love's opt-out means to the Celtics

Kevin Love likes the idea of playing in Boston. And the Celtics would like to have him on their team.

But at this point, the feelings on either side don’t appear to be strong enough to bring the two together. There would need to be a major change in the current circumstances to make Love want to be here and for the Celts to pursue him with the same vigor they did last summer.

Multiple reports have Love opting out of the final year of his contract and becoming an unrestricted free agent. He can now call his own shot.

But clearly he did not walk away from $16,744,218 next year to sign a short-term deal in anticipation of the salary cap windfall to come with the league's new TV contracts. And he did not opt out to sign even a longer deal for short money.

Mock draft: Bobby Portis on Celtics’ radar

As the sun rises on the 2015 NBA Draft, the Celtics are discovering that the price for a move into the Top 10 may be prohibitive.

“Teams are falling in love with their picks,” a league source said yesterday.

Though Danny Ainge has plenty of time to entice someone into a move, the Celtics have drawn a very strong conclusion about this year’s draft order. If they can’t move into the Top 10 tonight, they have determined that it makes better sense to stay at pick Nos. 16 and 28.

If only the talent at that level was more stirring.

“I’m trying to fall in love,” Ainge said earlier this week.

With that in mind, don’t fall in love with this mock draft. History says that it will break your heart, or make you laugh.

No. 16 pick: Celtics select Terry Rozier

BOSTON -- A few quick thoughts on the Boston Celtics' first-round pick (No. 16 overall):

The pick: Terry Rozier, guard, Louisville

My take: Say this for Danny Ainge, he's not afraid to make a bold pick. With a fan base already a bit ruffled from Boston's inability to move up in the draft -- as Ainge had stressed this week that he desired to do -- the Celtics seemingly reached a bit for a player who was projected as a late first-rounder before a surge up the draft board. Celtics fans were going to be disappointed regardless of who Boston picked after missing out on the cream of the draft, now Ainge has to prove he knew more than the draft pundits.

No. 28 pick: Celtics take R.J. Hunter

BOSTON -- A few quick thoughts on the Boston Celtics’ first-round pick (No. 28 overall):

The pick: R.J. Hunter, guard, Georgia State

My take: If Boston’s perceived reach for Terry Rozier at No. 16 left fans crotchety, the Hunter pick was received a bit warmer after the shooter appeared to slide a bit. It doesn’t hurt that Boston is desperate for shooting, the No. 1 thing Hunter brings to the table.

Blakely: Mickey a ‘huge steal’ for Celtics at No. 33

With their first selection of the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft the Boston Celtics selected LSU forward Jordan Mickey.

Celtics Insider A. Sherrod Blakely is a big fan of the selection.

"I think they were a little bit surprised that he was available there at 33," said Blakely. "It's a huge steal… This is a good pick. I like this spot for him.

BOSTON - With the 45th pick in the NBA Draft the Boston Celtics selected guard Marcus Thornton from William & Mary.

Known for his shooting, Thornton was the CAA Player of the Year last season.

He finished as William & Mary's career leader in points, three-pointers and games played.

Ainge: ‘We’re going to continue to try to add superstars'

Going into Thursday night's NBA Draft, many were hoping for fireworks, but Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics were unable to find another team that would be willing to make a deal.

"The price was really high. There was a time where I was saying, 'whoah, what am I doing here? This is getting a little bit out of control,'" explained Ainge on SportsNet Central. "I'm sort of relieved. If we had moved up there was a stretch where we would've put a big burden on a young player that is sort of unproven to change our franchise. So I think it's good. I think it's good that we didn't pull the trigger."

Despite 'unbelievable offers,' Ainge unable to make a deal

BOSTON – Celtics fans are quick to remember Danny Ainge’s success on the trade market.

Apparently the same can be said for opposing teams who wanted no part of making deals with Danny leading up to Thursday night’s draft.

The Celtics had a pair of first-round picks – No. 16 and No. 28 – that they were looking to package with other assets to climb into the top 10.
